Rye Country Day School is seeking a full time Middle School Study Skills Coordinator to join the faculty beginning in the fall of 2023. Rye Country Day School is a coeducational, PreK-12, college preparatory school located in Westchester County, New York dedicated to providing students with an excellent education using both traditional and innovative approaches. The Middle School Study Skills Program provides students with instruction and practice in learning how to be a student by understanding how the brain learns best. Through activities, explicit instruction, group discussions, and note-taking, students practice and strengthen executive functioning skills, all while gaining a sense of control and ownership of their learning. The Study Skills Program Coordinator is a member of the Student Support Services team and works closely with the Middle School Principal, Director of Learning Support Services, Middle School Counselor, Middle School Learning Specialists, grade-level deans, and Middle School faculty to support students.
Specific responsibilities of the position include:
- Coordinate and execute the 5-8 study skills curriculum, focusing on topics such as what learning is, what the brain can do and how it learns best, individual learning profiles and tools that best fit particular learning styles, self-advocacy, strategies for improving retention and recall, materials management and organizational systems, time management, overcoming procrastination, active listening, note taking, effective study strategies, and critical thinking
- Teach rotating study skills classes to all students in grades 5-8
- Partner with MS Counselor to ensure students’ social, emotional, and academic needs are addressed. The MS Study Skills Coordinator and MS Counselor work to address individual student needs as well as grade-level concerns so that the SEEK and Study Skills programs are aligned.
- Collaborate with teachers to make the study skills curriculum responsive to students’ real-time learning in their academic classes
- Serve as a resource for teachers with regard to incorporating study skills in their curricula and pedagogy
- Design and lead meaningful professional development for middle school teachers in the teaching of study skills and other related skills
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with students, colleagues, and families
- Seek and participate in professional development opportunities
- Participate in meetings, field trips, special activities, and rotational duties
- Serve as a Middle School academic advisor
Desired qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field; Master’s degree preferred
- 3-5 years of experience teaching in a middle school setting
- Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills
- Comfort with technology, including a 1:1 laptop program and online course management system; familiarity with Zoom and hybrid/online teaching
- Commitment to professional development and personal growth
- A well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- An ability and willingness to support the extracurricular life of the school
- Genuine excitement for and ability to work with Middle School students, employees, and parents and guardians
- Excitement for the school’s various initiatives
