Sayre School is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable specialist to provide targeted literacy instruction using the Barton Reading and Spelling System, a structured, multisensory phonics-based intervention designed for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. The ideal candidate will work closely with students in grades 5–8, helping them build foundational reading and spelling skills to support academic success across subjects.
This position is 30 hours per week (benefits eligible) beginning in August 2025.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide individualized and small-group instruction using the Barton Reading and Spelling System.
Administer assessments such as CTOPP, GORT, TOWRE and AIMSWeb benchmarking measures to identify student needs and measure progress.
Monitor and document student performance, maintaining accurate and timely records.
Collaborate with classroom teachers, academic services specialists, outside providers, and parents to develop and implement strategies that support literacy development.
Create a positive, encouraging, and structured learning environment for students with reading challenges.
Along with the Director of Academic Services, division director, and teachers, ensure the smooth transition of students from grade to grade, and from the eighth grade to the Upper School.
Stay current on best practices in literacy instruction and dyslexia intervention.
Assist with implementing assistive technology tools for students to enhance their reading performance.
Participate in professional development related to the Barton System and literacy education.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, Reading, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
Experience working with students with dyslexia or other learning disabilities.
Strong understanding of multisensory, structured literacy instruction.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Patience, flexibility, and a passion for helping struggling readers succeed.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience implementing the Barton Reading and Spelling System or another structured literacy program
Familiarity with Learning Plan processes and documentation.
Knowledge of Orton-Gillingham-based approaches.
Knowledge of Assistive Technology tools used to enhance reading performance.
