SSM is searching for a Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to start in July 2023. The Director will lead the School’s work to deepen programming and initiatives related to DEI, engage in efforts to strengthen school climate and build community, and collaborate with others to determine our next phase of DEI strategic planning.
Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 400 students in grades 6th-postgraduate from 41 states and over 19 countries. Set on a beautiful 250-acre campus south of Minneapolis/St. Paul in Minnesota, SSM offers a mix of traditional and progressive education.
The Director will focus on student engagement, the reintegration of a DEI position into our administrative team, and the renewal and updating of our ongoing efforts on DEI initiatives after the disruption of the pandemic. This person is someone who can positively impact our school community, is inspired and invigorated by helping our school grow in our DEI work, can maintain a solution-oriented focus in the face of complex issues, and can navigate conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice with diverse groups of people.
The Director will serve as a member of our administrative team and work closely with other established administrative and faculty committees, such as the DEI Committee, the Academic Team, and the Curriculum Advisory Board.
Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to our Head of School, the DEI Director will lead, guide, or advise all educational and organizational aspects of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Some key responsibilities include:
- Guide established student-led diversity and affinity groups; mentor and supervise other faculty and student leaders of these groups.
- Provide mentorship and resources for students as they learn and develop their understanding of their own identities and as they learn to work with others.
- Review current school-wide DEI initiatives for advisory and community programming.
- Collaborate with the Head of School and others on the scope of future initiatives.
- Maintain a lens of equity, inclusion, diversity, and justice during administrative team meetings.
- Engage with school leadership regarding alignment of advisory, residential, and academic curricula with the vision and mission of school, with a particular focus on DEI initiatives.
- Advise Human Resources as they strive to recruit and retain an increasingly diverse pool of employees.
- Teach 1 section of an academic course with a DEI-informed curriculum.
As Shattuck-St. Mary’s is a boarding school, this position includes residential life duty.
We are looking for a self-motivated, solution-oriented, and collaborative person who is passionate about working with students in a diverse and innovative educational environment, committed to the development of young people, and able to work across constituency groups to effect change and make progress with new initiatives.
Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice initiatives in an educational environment. Applicants must also have philosophical alignment with our mission, vision, and core values. In addition:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in Education or other relevant fields preferred.
- 5+ years experience teaching or other relevant experience working in schools with students in grades 6-12; applicants with alternative related experience are encouraged to apply.
In support of its pursuit of academic and scholarly excellence, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is committed to creating a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff that is dedicated to the fundamental principles of equal opportunity treatment in education and employment regardless of age, color, disability, gender identity, national origin, political ideology, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status. The school encourages and is eager to consider applications from individuals whose differing backgrounds, beliefs, ideas, and life experiences will further enrich the diversity of its educational community.
