The Bement School seeks a dynamic, collaborative educator to assume leadership of its upper division (grades 6 - 9) as Upper School Head beginning July 1, 2023. The strongest candidates will possess deep experience in middle school education and an abiding enjoyment of adolescents ages 11 - 15. Additional sought-after qualities will include experience supervising and mentoring faculty and a demonstrated commitment to building educational communities that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. The Bement School is a day and boarding school serving students in grades K-9, with an enrollment of roughly 220 students. The upper school is Bement’s largest division, encompassing approximately 115 students each year (including ~45 boarding students) and 20 faculty. Located on Old Main Street in Deerfield, MA, the school occupies a unique relationship with a beautiful and historic community.
Description: The Upper School Head provides comprehensive leadership for all activities involving students and faculty in the upper school. This includes curriculum development, support and supervision of teachers in their classroom initiatives, communication with parents, and oversight of educational programs.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and lead the culture of the Upper School in accordance with the mission of The Bement School
- Serve on Bement’s Leadership Team
- Observe, supervise, and assist in evaluating the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum.
- Oversee the Upper School programs, activities, services and procedures including co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, assemblies, events and programs.
- Promote learning, building a sense of community, and meeting the academic, aesthetic, and affective needs of Upper School students
- Play an active leadership role in articulating and implementing the Upper School’s relationship with parents in terms of its policies, rules, and expectations, behavioral guidelines and other necessary information pertinent to the Upper School. Responsible for all Upper School parent communication (written, printed, and online).
- Supervise faculty in maintaining student discipline consonant with Bement’s policies, monitoring student’s adherence to established school policies, and maintaining accurate records of student behavior.
- Oversee the ordering of textbooks and instructional materials for the Upper School curriculum.
- Establish programs for orientation of new teachers, inclusive of all in-service training, processes for evaluation of classroom faculty and professional development opportunities.
- Conduct regular meetings with Upper School faculty.
- Make recommendations to the Head of School regarding hiring and retention, and the assignment of Upper School Faculty.
- Support and encourage the professional development of faculty members in terms of their knowledge of their subject areas; teaching-related skills; advising-related skills; and pursuing new subject interests.
- Assist in the admission process for the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment in the Upper School.
- Provide academic guidance to all Upper School students.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Finance and Operations and Head of School to formulate and monitor the operating budget for the Upper School.
- Facilitate a resolution of all problems- both routine and unique- as they arise, keeping the Head of School apprised of the general programs, activities, and concerns in the Upper School.
- Direct instruction of students as needed and as appropriate with experience.
