Position Summary: The Haverford School is seeking an Upper School music teacher. Preferred candidates will be practicing musicians who have at least 5 years of teaching experience. In addition, the candidate will have a proven record of contributions to the life of the School in co-curricular areas, to include managing/conducting vocal ensembles and staging student performances.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach four sections of Music (Fundamentals, Composition, Advanced Theory, Thesis) in a rotating schedule (2-4 classes per day).
- Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
- Integrate 21st century learning strategies through technology and varied assessments
- Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
- Design, evaluate and grade students' class work and assessments.
- Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content and methods of instruction.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students
- Serve as Director to two student vocal ensembles (Glee Club, Notables):
- Organize and lead group and sectional rehearsals
- Direct performances at school and in the community abroad
- Plan and manage joint performances between Haverford and external institutions
- Participate in the school evaluation and professional development programs
- Advise students on academic and other matters in accordance with the School’s mission
- Schedule, prepare and attend student performances and concerts
- Participate in some infrequent evening or weekend activities, including meetings, professional development or other school activities
- Possesses an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion and the implementation of those principles in independent schools
- Other duties, as assigned
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 3-5 years teaching experience in a school environment, or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in piano/keyboard and conducting
- Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and parents
- Enthusiastic interest in teaching, motivating, coaching and mentoring high school students
- Ability to meet classroom, advisory, and extracurricular obligations on a regular and consistent schedule
- Ability to attend meetings before and after the normal school day schedule and sometimes in the evening
- Sense of humor, enthusiastic and happy, high ethical professional standards, and multi-cultural perspective
- Proven ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Driver’s License, mainly in order to drive the school van to Notables performances
Preferred Qualifications
- Recommended Masters or Masters Equivalent in Music (Performance, Theory, Education)
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Works in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
