Overview
The Department of English and World Literature at the Spence School invites applications for a one-year, interim position in our Upper School for the 2025-2026 academic year. The role offers an opportunity to join a team of experienced teachers who are committed to the ongoing development of our dynamic Upper School English and World Literature curriculum. The ideal candidate understands that effective teaching is both art and craft, embraces professional growth whole-heartedly, and sees open-minded collaboration as essential.
Responsibilities
Teach four sections of Upper School English and World Literature, including junior and senior elective courses
Collaborate on teaching teams in order to design curriculum, assessments, and teaching approaches
Participate in Department-wide initiatives, including responses to emerging technologies and curricular innovation
Qualifications
Find joy in working with students and in school life
Approach work with optimism, energy, kindness, and a sense of humor
Demonstrate cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
Demonstrate pedagogical skill, capacity in the craft of teaching, and love of literature
Demonstrate an understanding of effective writing and of how to teach writing asa deliberate, iterative process
Value and contribute to working on a team
Possess a degree in English or equivalent experience
Have sustained experience teaching Upper School English (Grades 9-12)
