The Waverly School seeks full-time School Counselor for middle and high school (7th – 12th), to start immediately. The School Counselor is a vital member of the Health and Wellness Team and will report to the Head of School. This role will support the overall social emotional health of the middle and high school students. Focusing on student well-being, the Counselor will identify and respond to student psychological and emotional challenges through short term counseling, crisis intervention and program development.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and effective clinician with demonstrated expertise in social-emotional wellness and the ability to support elementary age students. The successful candidate will present a positive, flexible, and helpful attitude, be a skilled communicator with a demonstrated history of impeccable judgment, discipline, and collegiality in managing complicated situations with varied constituencies and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and systemically with all teachers, students, families and external organizations. Excellent communication (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build trust and maintain the highest level of professionalism and commitment to confidentiality are essential to successfully playing this role.
Specific responsibilities of the middle and high school counselor include, but are not limited to:
- Working closely with the learning specialist and division directors, oversees interventions and action plans to support students academically, emotionally, socially, and behaviorally.
- Provide appropriate short-term crisis management and support in one-one-one and small groups, helping students to develop coping strategies, resiliency, and communication skills
- Lead student groups focused on social skills, emotional regulation skills, self- regulation and self-awareness skills
- Intervening when a student or students require responsive services, including counseling, consultation, referral, and/or information.
- Consult with and advise families, nursing staff, school administration, and faculty, as appropriate to develop routine care plans and develop a plan of action for students in need of further support
- Advising on the development and implementation of the middle and high school human development curriculum
- Maintain ongoing communication with the head of school and division directors to identify patterns of behavior that may suggest the need for counseling and/or support.
- Working closely with school directors, advising faculty and staff on appropriate professional boundaries with students, families, and colleagues.
- Designing and implementing professional development opportunities pertaining to students’ social and emotional well-being for Waverly faculty and staff.
- Designing and implementing parent education programs; and participating in the admission process (namely interviewing and serving on the admission committee).
- Collaborate with our elementary school Counselor and learning specialist
- Serve as a competent resource to students and their families in need of community-based services, including psychiatric care, mental health evaluations, and specialized treatment
- Actively participating in and contributing to the daily operation of the school.
- Other duties as assigned by the head of school
Required Qualifications:
- Experience as a school counselor, emphasis on middle and high school.
- Masters or Ph.D in psychology, social work, counseling, or related relevant discipline.
- Licensure in marriage and family therapy, clinical psychology or clinical social work (LCSW, LMFT, PPSC)
- Current certification to practice in the state of California
- Strong commitment to anti-racist and inclusive practices that support students of all backgrounds to succeed, to collaboration, and to self-reflection and personal growth.
- Exceptionally strong organizational, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships and relationships with students and families
- Proven success working with all constituencies in an independent school setting: students, families, faculty, and other colleagues, with wisdom, warmth, empathy, and humor.
- Demonstrated commitment to culturally competent practice, serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact
- Is willing to work in-person, on campus
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software in a PC environment, as required for record keeping and documentation
- Confident with remote learning platforms such as Zoom, Google Classroom, Teams
- Preference for candidates with a working knowledge or fluency in Spanish or Mandarin

Physical requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout classrooms
