Trinity School, a co-educational, K-12 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks an experienced Upper School Teacher of English beginning September 1, 2026.
Qualified candidates must have a minimum of two years' of teaching experience. An advanced degree in a relevant academic discipline is preferred.
The ideal candidate will be an outstanding, student-focused educator with a genuine enthusiasm for teaching at the high school level. They will possess a thoroughgoing intellectual curiosity and real desire to keep learning with and from others over the course of their careers. They will have broad literary interests, with a capacity to read and teach literature from a variety of periods and traditions. Most of all, they must have a deep and abiding love for – and belief in – the written word. The new hire will be joining an English Department that is creative and supportive and that values collegiality and a good sense of humor.
In ninth grade, students begin with the Odyssey and read texts that include Their Eyes Were Watching God and either Julius Caesar or Othello. In tenth grade, students will read texts including Oedipus, Things Fall Apart, and a selection by Austen or Bronte, while in junior year students begin a program that combines required texts (Hamlet, Beloved, The Great Gatsby) with an elective designed by the teacher. By senior year, students take exclusively teacher-designed electives, which span a huge variety of texts – some current examples include “The Adventures of Don Quixote," “Introduction to the Literature of East Asia," and "Postmodern Monsters." In addition to regular teaching duties, new hires should expect to spend a considerable amount of time working one-on-one with students.
An Equal Opportunity Employer, Trinity School seeks candidates who will add to the diversity of our school community.
Interested candidates should submit a resume and a cover letter outlining their readiness for this position. Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
Trinity School is a college preparatory, coeducational independent day school for Grades K-12, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Founded as a charity school at Trinity Church in 1709 for 40 students, it moved to its current location in 1895 and now has an average enrollment of 1,000. Trinity is no longer sponsored by a specific religious body, and the Trinity community is characterized by religious, racial, and ethnic diversity. Since its founding, Trinity has continued its commitment to enroll a talented, motivated, and diverse student body from every economic and social background by providing over $4.5 million in financial aid to students at all grades. The school is organized into a Lower School (K-Grade 4), a Middle School (Grades 5-8) and an Upper School (Grades 9-12). The ratio of students to teachers is six to one. The faculty members of the school, with over 20 doctorates and 96 master's degrees from selective colleges and universities around the world, are extraordinarily talented and dedicated. Conversation between students and teachers is the essence of the Trinity education.
Trinity School is not seeking assistance or accepting unsolicited resumes from se...arch firms without a formal request from the school to provide such assistance. Without such a request from the Head of School's office, any resumes submitted by search firms to any employee at Trinity School will be deemed the sole property of Trinity School, and no fee will be paid in the event the candidate is hired by Trinity School.
An Equal Opportunity Employer, Trinity School seeks candidates who will add to the diversity of our school community. More than this, Trinity School is expressly committed to deepening its anti-racism practices and calls on all community members to engage in this work.
