The Middle School Dean of Student Life at Academy of the Sacred Heart collaborates with administration, faculty, students, and parents to ensure that the spirit and life of the learning community promote joy and reflects the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education. The Middle School Dean of Student Life serves as a point of information for students and responds to students' needs. This individual also promotes proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students’ academic achievement, personal growth, and social development.
Essential duties include but are not limited to:
- Act as an advocate for students
- Provide leadership opportunities and routes for students to grow as leaders
- Develop and implement ongoing student programming that is both fun and builds community
- Facilitate the implementation of policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures pertaining to student behavior and attendance
- Communicate with students, parents, and staff in a timely manner regarding student behavior and attendance issues
- Manage day-to-day disciplinary issues in the middle school, working closely with faculty and staff to ensure compliance with school policies
- Serve as an instructional resource for intervention and equity services to support the development and growth of equitable systems and practices
- Work with student services staff in providing guidance and motivation for student success and in collaboratively developing plans for students who struggle
- Coordinate and facilitate restorative practices approach to discipline and serve as a liaison with key faculty and staff to support a systemic approach
- Provide consultation with staff as necessary to address student behavioral issues and develop individual student plans for behavior improvement
- Support students in extra-curricular activities by ensuring all events are attended by members of the faculty
- Supervise students during unstructured times such as before and after school, during passing times and during lunch periods
- Make recommendations concerning the revision and updating of student code of conduct, rules, regulations, and handbooks (annual review)
- Serve as emergency substitute teacher when need arises
- Act as the point person for students on a leave or with restricted attendance (i.e. partial days due to medical issues)
- Oversee the advisory system, partnering with counselors and Grade Level Teams
- Coordinate the year schedule for advisory in each grade, creating yearlong themes and developmentally appropriate curriculum for advisory
- Attend conferences, seminars, and workshops to improve and enhance professional skills
Fundamental skills include but are not limited to:
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and employees
- Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills
- Demonstrated strong leadership ability (e.g. conflict resolution skills, supervision/evaluation methodology, collected demeanor, and creative/solutions)
- Outstanding ability to work within the job description with independence and to make reasoned, sound judgments and decisions in assigned areas
- Broad knowledge of and skill in the application of all statutes, rules, regulations, and policies affecting student records, attendance, and discipline
- Excellent knowledge of and skill in computer use appropriate for managing student records and attendance
- Forward-looking thinker, who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions
Basic requirements include but are not limited to:
- Bachelor’s degree is required
- Master’s degree in Educational Leadership or closely related field preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
- Versatile expert in Microsoft Office and Google Suite

- Strong sense of discretion and professionalism
- Training on equity, diversity and culturally responsive pedagogy, as well as a willingness to extend professional development in these areas preferred
