Position Summary:
Albuquerque Academy seeks a full-time theatre teacher, beginning in August 2022. Courses taught include Theatre Foundations, Acting for the Camera, Acting Intensive and Playwriting and Directing, with students in grades 8-12. Teaching experience is strongly preferred, with skill in acting and directing for theatre and musical theatre, and some working knowledge of technical theatre is helpful.
We are looking for teachers who are also practicing performing artist, comfortable collaborating with colleagues, and enjoy the creativity and intensity of young students. The theatre program is staffed by four artist-teachers in a performing arts department of thirteen artist teachers. The theatre program includes a curriculum covering creative drama, theatre production, theatre performance, history, playwriting, directing, film, and technical theatre supported through classes and extracurriculars. Our teachers work with students across a full range, from beginners who are unsure of their arts interests to advanced students with a passion to pursue a career in the arts, to foster their growth and development into artists and arts appreciators who contribute to their community. The teacher’s daily activities include classroom teaching, advising, being available to students for assistance, supporting extracurricular activities, and serving the student and school community in a variety of other ways. The teacher reports to the department chair and the division head.
Teaching duties begin in August of 2022. They include four classes, various school duties, and extracurricular support through overseeing student directed productions and directing either a play or a musical theatre production. The extracurricular production work is rehearsed after school and presented outside of school hours for the school and larger local community. Essential Functions:
- Teaches four courses or the equivalent.
- Helps students develop skills to understand, discuss and demonstrate theatre arts on the page and through performance.
- Meets with students outside of class for additional help; generally being available to students throughout the school day.
- Gives regular formative and summative feedback to students about their work.
- Oversees an advisory group and engages fully in the divisional advising curriculum.
- Demonstrates content knowledge and expertise; scaffolds curriculum to ensure progress towards mastery.
- Fosters and stewards a culture of mutual respect, equitable practice, and joy, in and out of the classroom.
- Demonstrates cultural competence and communicates and collaborates effectively across differences.
- Sets high expectations for skill building, academic achievement, and character development.
- Exhibits strong working knowledge of student cognitive development and learning preferences.
- Identifies and supports students’ social, emotional, and academic needs.
- Provides timely feedback to students and collaborates with others to offer individualized support in pursuit of each student’s learning goals.
- Communicates effectively with students/families about classwork, learning goals, and student progress, writing comments home to parents at least once a semester describing the student’s progress.
- Designs formal and informal assessments that measure student progress; employs a variety of formative and summative assessments to gauge student progress toward mastery.
- Fosters student growth through structured opportunities for self-reflection.
- Provides opportunities for student engagement through differentiated instruction and student choice.
- Continues to develop professionally by attending conferences and workshops, performing professionally or in groups outside of school, and the like.
Other Responsibilities:
- Volunteers to help with other school duties such as chaperoning dances, monitoring supervised study hall, proctoring standardized tests, etc.
- Attends full faculty, divisional, and departmental meetings
- Attends and supports divisional or school activities
- Attends lunch to help to monitor the dining hall
- Writes an annual report
- May be asked to mentor another teacher or become part of an evaluation team for a colleague
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Experience
- 2-5 years prior teaching experience is preferred
- Prior experience with adolescents is preferred
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in theatre studies
- Advanced studies, professional experience or a Master’s degree in theatre arts or education is preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Deep knowledge of theatre literature, history, dramatic performance, writing and direction instruction, with the ability to teach both beginning and accomplished young artists the possible range of classes from Drama 6 through high school Advanced Theatre Studies in performance, directing, playwriting and design
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to direct theatrical productions including plays and musicals
- Demonstrable classroom management skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Excellent communication and public relations skills
- Ability to work well with people, especially adolescents; being a productive team member
- Strong organizational skills and time management skills
- Computer skills including video recording and editing, writing and play production instructional programs, Microsoft Office software, learning management systems, and online teaching techniques
