Culver Academies in Culver, Indiana seeks an accomplished teacher of instrumental music beginning with the 2022-2023 School Year. Culver is a private, coeducational boarding school serving grades 9-12.
Candidates must have a thorough command of all the foundational elements necessary for teaching instrumental music in a student-centered environment, display a highly-developed level of musicianship, and be able to establish active working relationships with other faculty. Preference will be given to the applicant who has expertise in string or brass instruments, though all instrumental backgrounds will be considered. We seek someone with evidence of sustained excellence in teaching and conducting at the high school level. It is preferred that candidates have more than three years teaching experience, a master’s degree in a music related discipline and some experience leading in a school or professional environment.
The role may include opportunities to teach private lessons in your area of expertise and the possibility of teaching non-performance based classes like African American Music, Music Appreciation or Music Theory. Knowledge of the characteristics and requirements of marching or military band is a plus for this position, since the boys’ side of the school, Culver Military Academy, uses our own military system to serve as a leadership laboratory. Culver Girls Academy uses a prefect system to practice leadership. All classes at Culver Academies are coeducational.
The successful candidate will work closely with several other colleagues in a department of full-time and part-time music teachers, as well as the others in the Fine Arts program. We seek not only to maintain the quality and scope of the music program but also to adjust music offerings to meet educational goals and student needs and interests. Candidates should be interested in engaging in and possibly leading curricular efforts in the entire music area of the Fine Arts department. Culver’s music program is expansive and diverse. In some ways, our program is similar to many high school music programs; however, the boarding school environment introduces a unique and complex set of dynamics, which can affect the nature, scope and thrust of the activities of the program.
Our students have high expectations for their education, and they demand that their teachers be positive, energetic, motivating and supremely compassionate examples of what a servant leader must be in all that he or she does. Since Culver is a secondary level boarding school, supervisory and mentoring opportunities outside music with students is expected, as is designated by the department chair, Dean of Faculty and Head of School.
Culver Academies places a premium on a teaching and learning culture in which faculty routinely talk about practice, observe each other in the practice of teaching, create curriculum together, and teach each other what they know about teaching and learning. Professional development is available for all instructors and is born from goals set by individual teachers and goals established within the fine arts department. Opportunities include traditional off-campus workshops and conferences, graduate work, research with students or colleagues, faculty-developed curriculum projects, and regularly scheduled on-campus forums for learning support, educational technology, disciplinary expertise and culture.
The Culver Academies offers competitive salary and benefits packages and is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
