Gateway School, in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA, is a CAIS accredited, independent K-8 day school of approximately 150 students that provides children with an academically challenging environment that nurtures their commitment to justice for society, service to the community, and compassion for others. Our school is notable for its innovative instruction, co-curricular program integration, close student-teacher relationships, and supportive parent community.
Gateway School is seeking to hire a full-time teacher to work in a self-contained Elementary classroom. Preferred candidates will have a research-based pedagogy, e?ective collaboration skills, an ethic of continuous professional improvement, a good sense of humor, and high integrity.
Successful candidates will be able to see each child as an individual and demonstrate e?ective culturally responsive practices that allow for students’ lived experience to be honored. Salary and benefits are competitive. Salary is dependent upon years of teaching experience. The bene?ts package includes employee coverage for medical, dental and vision insurance, paid holiday time, paid sick time and a 403(b) retirement savings plan.
The position requires:
- Implementing a variety of literacy teaching techniques including workshop model, literature circles, and a range of other pedagogies;
- Teaching math using Bridges as a starting point, and providing di?erentiation and enrichment through a variety of materials and approaches;
- Thematic and inquiry-based instruction in science and social studies, and the integration of visual arts as a means of demonstrating understanding;
- A deep understanding of the developmental norms of children, and the ability to design curriculum that leverages collaborative activities and projects;
- Creating a culture of learning through an SEL approach that weaves together emotional intelligence, character education, Mindfulness, growth mindset, team building, class agreements and meetings, and con?ict resolution;
- Integrating a range of hardware and software tools into on-campus instruction, as well as possibly providing remote learning;
- Teaching as part of a “team of teachers;”
- Field trips and other extracurricular duties, including an overnight ?eld trip in April;
- Excellent communication skills with families, students, colleagues and administration, on both a regular and ad-hoc basis.

Qualifcations: Required
- Bachelor's degree
- Successful classroom teaching experience at the elementary level
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to communicate e?ectively and proactively with all members of the community, including students, faculty, sta?, and parents
Preferred
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- Current teaching credential
- Knowledge and understanding of independent schools
- Knowledge and understanding of child development, neuroscience-based instruction, and elective differentiation
- A commitment to furthering community education on issues of justice and equity
