Maumee Valley Country Day School is seeking an individual who is passionate about the physical health and well-being of children and strives to change lives through physical education. The best candidate will teach a variety of sports and activities to ignite a child’s passion for physical activity and healthy choices. Physical Education has a symbiotic relationship with sportsmanship, leadership, and grit. The successful candidate must be able to teach fundamental, age-appropriate motor skills and concepts combined with a variety of sport-specific skills. Being able to utilize and adapt a comprehensive physical education curriculum to include, but is not limited to, themes of sportsmanship, teamwork, and lifelong habits for a healthy and active lifestyle is essential. Applicants must possess a high energy level, a sound understanding of child development, and solid classroom management skills.
This position reports to the Head of Lower School and collaborates closely with the Director of Athletics and specialist teachers. This role may serve as Department Chair for Health and Physical Education, having stewardship of the related curriculum in PS-12th grade. As such, this role includes membership in the Department Chairs meetings and the All-School Curriculum Committee.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students using a variety of pedagogical practices
- Uses fair and equitable practices in planning and execution of lesson plans
- Can teach individual fitness and incorporate choice to students
- Coach for afterschool sports
- Incorporate nature-based and outdoor education pedagogy into unit plans
- Create strong home-school communication structures and classroom environments
- Possess an in-depth understanding of backward planning design, organizing instruction around established learning objectives, and the vital importance of planning
- Create and maintain strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues
- Demonstrate that they can lead and guide colleagues and/students to depth in their work
- Eager to learn new approaches and methods and be able to team effectively with others
- Show initiative and agency with a commitment to feedback and flexible problem solving
- Possess a strong understanding and ability to use a variety of assessment practices to determine student progress levels and adjust the instructional program to assist students in being successful
- Create and maintain partnerships with physical education department colleagues, the great specialist team, homeroom teachers, and academic support team members (intervention specialists, counselors, etc.)
- Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills
- Encompass a growth mindset by showing evidence of establishing and completing professional development goals that focus on improving student performance
- Display a personal passion to keep abreast of educational research and effective practice
- Previous experience with climbing walls, low ropes courses and archery preferred

Credentials:
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in physical education, kinesiology or related movement and sports sciences field
- Previous experience teaching elementary physical education preferred
Faculty - Must be willing and able to secure an Ohio Permanent Non-Tax certificate or Professional Teaching license. The school will support you in obtaining this once hired. However, it must be secured within the first six months of employment for compliance purposes.
