Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 38 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C. As one of the finest PK-8 schools in the country, Norwood sets the bar high and is committed to educating the whole child in a diverse, student-centered, challenging, and nurturing environment, which continually promotes equity, inclusion, and cultural competence.
Norwood’s child-centered education emphasizes creating a happy place of learning where each child is loved, nurtured, and challenged. Ensuring each child is truly known, we recognize diversity as essential to supporting educational excellence and are dedicated to fostering a sense of dignity, belonging, and understanding across our community. As a result, children flourish at Norwood as we tend to both hearts and minds. They love learning; they are creative and critical thinkers. They are confident in who they are, and they feel safe taking risks. They are kind and caring people, who, fueled by our motto, How you lead your life matters, make helping others a priority in their lives. At the end of their eighth grade year, our graduates leave Norwood exceptionally well prepared for high school and empowered to make positive contributions to our world.
Norwood has an opening for an experienced and dynamic Second Grade Homeroom Teacher starting in the 2022-2023 academic year. Second grade teachers at Norwood create and maintain a loving, nurturing, joyful, and child-centered learning environment in which children are challenged, encouraged, and supported. The ideal candidate will be responsible for working with his/her co-teacher to plan, instruct, and assess reading/language arts, math, and social studies in their homeroom; to integrate lessons about character throughout the curriculum; and to deliver differentiated instruction for a wide range of abilities and interests. He/she is also comfortable and excited about using technology for teaching and learning. Second grade homeroom teachers will also collaborate regularly with specialists who teach art, library, music, physical education, science, and Spanish.
Applicants for the position must have at least three years of experience working with students in lower elementary grades. A familiarity with Readers and Writers Workshop is preferred. Strong applicants will have a demonstrated commitment to anti-bias education with a child-centered pedagogy. Additional qualifications include excellent communication skills, flexibility, sense of humor, and a love for working with children.
Bachelor’s degree required and masters preferred. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to Mike Risen, Head of Lower School, at mrisen@norwoodschool.org. No phone calls, please.
