The Buckley School, Los Angeles’ oldest K-12 coeducational learning institution, has an opening for an Assistant Director of Athletics. This position is responsible for assisting with the planning, developing, organizing and managing all athletic programs within The Buckley School (K- 12) to ensure quality physical education. The Assistant Director of Athletics collaborates with the Director of Athletics and Wellness to create a program to ensure that students develop an understanding of how to create and sustain mental, emotional, and physical health. The Assistant will oversee all aspects of grades K-8 PE and grades 5-8 athletics. Serving as the Department Chair, this position works collaboratively with other chairs, faculty, and division head so design both discipline-specific and transdisciplinary curriculum, and implement instructional practices aligned with the school’s mission, commitment to DEI, and Portrait of a Graduate. This position is also responsible for teaching physical education classes across lower, middle, and upper divisions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist the Director of Athletics & Wellness with the development and implementation of research-based, developmentally appropriate K-12 wellness and P.E/athletic curriculum to fulfill the school’s mission, commitment to DEI, the Buckley Commitment, and the Portrait of a Graduate
- Promote the implementation of health and wellness programs to employ instructional practices to create equitable and inclusive teams, classroom communities and student experiences characterized as uplifting and affirming learning experiences for all students
- Work with the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications to promote Buckley Athletics to the broader community
- Supervise and oversee sporting events and scheduling of games
- Participate in the life of the school by attending assemblies, games, concerts, galas, and other school events
RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Department Leadership:
- Join with the Assistant Head of School, Director of Athletics & Wellness, and division heads in creating, organizing, and evaluating a range of professional development experiences for K-12 faculty
- Lead department to discuss innovations in the field, to review and revise curriculum and instructional practice, and to assess departmental programs, etc.
- Plan and lead departmental meetings to review administrative policies, discuss current department issues, etc. Oversee the business of the department
- Work with the Assistant Head of School, the Director of Athletics & Wellness and each department member to set annual department member goals, assessing strengths and areas of growth
- Coach, mentor, and evaluate the department’s teachers both formally and informally to ensure the use of best practices, and to provide support and feedback
- Possess expertise in discipline-specific and transdisciplinary content and instructional practice to serve as the department’s master teacher and demonstrate commitment to continuous learning and updating practices
- Assist the Assistant Head of School, Director of Athletics & Wellness, and division heads with recruiting, interviewing, hiring and retaining candidates who advance the school’s mission, Portrait of a Graduate, commitment to DEI, and Commitment
- Assist Director of Summer School and Summer Camp with summer faculty hiring
- Review all prose reports within the department
- Oversee development and evaluation of final semester projects and assessments
- Conduct annual performance evaluations for the department
- Review grade distribution in the department and among the department’s teachers
- Meet with other department chairs and senior administrators to develop academic transdisciplinary opportunities and ensure coordination between departments and divisions
- Act as a liaison between the Athletics office and Business Office to
- Secure transportation for all team practices and games
- Collect, organize, and submit receipts and/or create purchase orders
- Support the Athletics Department in securing facilities for all team practices and games
- Order, organize, and distribute all athletics equipment, forms, awards, and uniforms for all teams and coaches
- Create the weekly schedule for all teams and communicate logistics to coaches and faculty
- Coordinate schedules, dismissal times, campus events with the Plant Operations Department and communicate updates
- Submit game schedules to assignors to book game officials
- Update the school social media / website regularly with photos, news, and updates about calendar, games, practices, and team information adhering to guidance from Communications Department
- Update CIF site with games and scores
- Connect with the Communications Department to relay updates for the broader community
- Submit athletes for All California Interscholastic Federation (CIF)
- Coordinate Athletic trainers for events
- Serve as liaison for coaching staff with student athletes and the Athletic Director
- Organize playoffs and post playoff games in accordance with CIF compliance
- Support attendance routines for coaches and school-day attendance
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in physical education, kinesiology or related field
- Two years successful experience organizing and/or implementing moderate to complex plans or programs
- Experience coaching a sports team and/or two years’ experience participating in a sport at the collegiate level

- Demonstrates strong communication skills in person, in writing, by phone and through other electronic means (such as Zoom)
