The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time Interim English teacher beginning in Aug of 2022. This position entails teaching two sections of our 9th or 10th grade English and two sections of 11th/12th mixed grade, semester-long, English seminars. Candidates should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment. A qualified candidate will have:
- A bachelor's degree in English or a related field. A teaching credential is not required.
- Enthusiasm for working with high school students outside of the classroom as part of our advising system and other programs
- Demonstrated cultural competence
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Patience and flexibility
- Experience working in teams and a strong sense of collegiality

A preferred candidate will have:
- Experience teaching English at either the high school or college level
- Interest in developing 11th-12th grade seminars that represent diverse voices rooted in World Literature, African-American Literature, or Indigenous Literature.
- Interest in possible administrative opportunities
- A good sense of humor
The College Prep English program is innovative and rigorous. It includes two years of required year-long courses: English I (in the 9th grade) and English II (in the 10th grade), followed by two years of elective English seminars for students in the 11th and 12 grades. English seminars include thematic courses, such as Hyphen: Asian-American Literature, LatinX Literature, Environmental Literature, Seafaring Literature, and Afrofuturism, or period-specific courses such as 19th century Russian Literature, The Harlem Renaissance, and Shakespeare's Comedies. English teachers work closely with one another, honing and reshaping the curriculum, be they team-taught courses or individually taught seminars. Each member of the department is asked to develop seminars that draw upon their literary expertise and academic interests.
