Assistant Division Head, Middle School
Position begins August 1, 2022 (school year, through mid-June)
The Pembroke Hill School is seeking an assistant division head for the middle school (grades 6-8) that has a commitment to student success and has experience developing strong professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues. The assistant division head provides direct support to the division head in an academically focused environment. The ideal candidate would inspire students and colleagues through passion and empathy while exuding a love for teaching and learning. The Middle school has 250 students in an independent school college preparatory environment. Our students and families are dedicated to the learning process and are committed to the well-being and growth of children.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities:
- Work directly with the middle school division head to facilitate whole school improvement initiatives.
- Maintain knowledge of current issues regarding curriculum development and design, effective teaching strategies, and successful meeting facilitation.
- Collaborate with the upper and lower school for the transition of students between divisions.
- Helps the division head in planning and implementing late start meetings, faculty meetings, and in-service professional development.
- Assists in written communications with parents, students, and faculty.
The Academic Program:
- Monitor student academic progress and provide for the academic and behavior guidance of students.
- Maintain student academic records. Oversee the grading and report of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement.
- Observe, supervise, and evaluate curriculum development and implementation.
- Analyze data from standardized testing and other sources to assist in curriculum and staff development.
- Oversee the reporting of progress reports and report cards.
- Partner with the MS leadership team for engaging students in school-wide or grade-level initiatives.
- Partner with team leaders, department chairs, counselor, and other school leaders for school improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with learning specialist to build a support system for students with additional learning needs.
Student Conduct Responsibilities:
- With the dean and division head, oversee student conduct and behavior that is conducive to the implementation of the student handbook, the school’s mission, and the core values.
- Assists the division head and dean in supervision including passing periods, lunch, before/after school, and school activities. i.e., field trips, orientations, assemblies, performances, etc
- Maintain student discipline records.
- Partner with the dean for student-related conduct approaches to discipline, and student-related initiatives.
- Engage the school counselor on student conduct which might require counseling support.
- Develops innovative strategies, preventative approaches, and proactive plans for student conduct.
- Assists in the review of the student handbook and recommend any policy changes or additions as needed.
- Minimum of 20 additional days in summer scheduled with the division head. Additional duties outside of school hours, as requested and required.
- ?Attend one-on-one meetings with parents, students, and faculty at the division head’s request.
- Effectively communicate with parents, students, and faculty verbally and in writing.
- Assists and supports individual faculty in partnership with the middle school leadership team.
- Plan and implement divisional parent education programs with the division head.
- Serve as the head administrator of the middle school in the division head’s absence.
- Assist the middle school division head in hiring new faculty.
- Establish and manage programs for the orientation of new teachers.
- Attend all required meetings.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree, preferrably in education or education administration
Min 5 years experience as an educator
Relevant experience in educational leadership
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task effectively
Demonstrated ability to manage faculty development, student engagement, and documentation.
