Position Title: Middle School English Teacher
Reports to: Middle School Division Head
Employment Status: Full-Time 10 Month
FLSA Classification: Exempt
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Walker Middle School (grades 6-8) is seeking a passionate and experienced educator to teach Eighth Grade Middle School English. Middle School teachers have the responsibility for teaching and supporting students in and out of the classroom. All Middle School teachers also serve as advisors for a group of 10-15 students. Preference will be given to candidates interested in contributing to the full life of the school through coaching or sponsoring a major student organization.
Teachers work closely with the Department Chair and the Head of Middle School for guidance, curriculum assessment, and evaluation. Teachers meet regularly with both grade-level teams and the middle school English department to discuss curriculum, pedagogy, student progress, and special initiatives. The eighth-grade English curriculum focuses on critical thinking, making meaning, and writing in multiple genres. Students learn to craft compositions that develop a personal voice as well as analytical arguments about texts that connect to the larger world. Students are increasingly encouraged to lead the discussion of literature and critically examine texts and ideas. All three grades in the middle school curriculum include a vibrant independent reading program, study of poetry, literary fiction and nonfiction, Socratic circles, and grammar and vocabulary development.
