Founded in 1884, and serving a diverse population of 330 students from the New York City metropolitan area, Staten Island Academy is located on a beautiful 12 acre campus on the top of Todt Hill.
The 110 children in the Lower School, grades PK3- Grade 4, are housed in two separate classroom buildings that are contiguous with a large playground on our 13-acre campus.
More than 20 full and part-time teachers report to the Lower School Head. Specialists in art, music, dance, physical education, computers, science, and library serve all Lower School classes. In addition to traditional elementary school offerings, children participate in annual class plays, field trips, community service activities, assemblies, and school-wide events.
The Head of the Lower School is responsible for curriculum oversight, supervision and inspiration of faculty, program development, cultural competency and be equipped to further the DEIB initiatives of the Lower School. Additionally, the Lower School Director is charged with the supervision of children, and maintaining excellent relationships with parents. The Head of Lower School is a member of the Administrative Team and reports directly to the Head of School. The successful candidate will love children, schools, and elementary education. The person must be warm, supportive but firm, have a good sense of humor, and be an excellent team player.
The Head of Lower School should be an experienced faculty mentor who is committed to, and capable of, leading professional growth and development. The person must have in-depth knowledge of Lower School curriculum in a child-centered environment. Demonstrated communication, leadership, organizational, writing, and public speaking skills are essential. Staten Island Academy seeks a visionary Lower School Head who will lead faculty, students, and parents.
