JOB DESCRIPTION: Middle School English and Humanities Instructor, grades 7 - 8
JOB SUMMARY: The Hickory Day School middle-school English and Humanities instructor teaches three or four classes each day to students in grades 7 through 8. The instructor reports to the Head of School and collaborates with all members of the middle school faculty and school staff. Other duties throughout the day may include supervising a study hall, serving as an academic-assist resource, filling in for an absent colleague, coaching and/or sponsoring a team/club, or other duties as assigned.
JOB START DATE: January 5, 2025, or earlier - this search is for the completion of the 2025-2026 school year with the possibility of continued employment for future years.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND DESCRIPTION: * A minimum of an undergraduate degree in history, literature, social sciences, education, or related fields is required. North Carolina teacher certification is highly desired. * Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the school community. * Love of children and education, along with the ability to deal with middle-school students effectively and inspirationally in a caring, compassionate, and supportive manner. * Willingness to support the mission, beliefs, and practices of Hickory Day School. * A commitment to ongoing professional development in the fields of both education and history/humanities. * Creation of meaningful and challenging lessons that reinforce classroom curricula and encourage students to expand their horizons and global perspectives. * Ancillary duties include, but are not limited to, participation in all faculty/staff meetings, teacher workdays, school events, student assessment, weekly classroom communication, and student supervision. The normal teacher workday is 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. * Supervision/coaching of at least an extracurricular or athletic activity * Professional demeanor and decorum are required at all times.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES: * Previous experience in a school setting. * North Carolina (or other state) teacher licensure.
