The Department of English and World Literature at the Spence School invites applications for a position in our Upper School for the 2026-2027 academic year. The role offers an opportunity to join a team of experienced teachers who are committed to the ongoing development of our dynamic Upper School English and World Literature curriculum. The ideal candidate understands that effective teaching is both art and craft, embraces professional growth whole-heartedly, and sees open-minded collaboration as essential.
Spence seeks an English and World Literature teacher to join our dynamic Grades 5–12 program in writing and world literature, including a vibrant array of elective offerings. As a dedicated educator, the teacher will engage students in intellectually rigorous and joyful scholarship, nurturing their curiosity, confidence, and creative development as readers and writers.
Working collaboratively within a curious and intellectually-engaged department, the teacher contributes to a cohesive program grounded in deep thinking, authentic inquiry, and inclusive community. The teacher brings a commitment to ongoing professional growth, thoughtful curriculum design, and the daily work of helping students read with care, write with precision, embrace complexity, and collaborate with insight. Through inspired teaching and meaningful relationships, this educator helps students discover the power of literature and their own voices.
Responsibilities
Teach four sections of Upper School English and World Literature, including junior and senior elective courses
Collaborate on teaching teams in order to design curriculum, assessments, and teaching approaches
Participate in Department-wide initiatives, including responses to emerging technologies and curricular innovation
Qualifications
