Houston Academy is a premier independent, college preparatory school located in Dothan, AL. Houston Academy is searching for an Upper School Social Science/Studies teacher (beginning in the 2026-27 school year) to teach United States History, AP US History and one or more electives.
Social Studies Teacher Job Duties:
Teach Upper School Social Studies courses (5 sections) and an elective class or study hall.
Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
Select and obtain materials and supplies such as textbooks and electronic media.
Attend professional development opportunities .
Participate in campus and community events.
Sponsor an extracurricular activity such as a service club or team.

A master’s degree, preferably in a related field or measurable mastery of the subject area.

Experience teaching and/or a willingness to teach upper school students History.
Experience teaching and/or a willingness to teach Advanced Placement curriculum.

History:
Houston Academy is a co-educational day school for three-year-old preschool through twelfth grade. The school was founded to fill the community’s need for a college preparatory school to serve the Dothan area and surrounding communities. The nineteen-acre campus is located in one of Dothan's finest residential areas. Located in the southeast corner of Alabama, Dothan is a progressive community of approximately 70,000 people, with nearly 225,000 people in the metropolitan area. It offers cultural and recreational activities as well as a two major medical centers, a community college, a four-year university, and a school of osteopathic medicine.
The campus, which was renovated in 1995,... features four modern buildings connected by covered walkways. Included in the facilities are forty-five classrooms; two daycare rooms; library; Lower School science lab; Upper School labs for chemistry, biology, physical science, and Middle School science; state of the art Lower and Upper School art rooms; Lower and Upper School computer labs; two gymnasiums; a classroom for music and band; and a cafetorium. In 2002, the Dove Center was completed. It houses the Upper School English department, a computer lab, a computer classroom, art room, yearbook room, and the library. The school also maintains two playgrounds with one having a young children’s gazebo and the other newly renovated in 2005 with a covered area; along with a practice football field, and a practice baseball field. In 2013, a state-of-the art student activities center was built. Currently, the school completing a $13 million campus expansion and renovation, which includes STEAM labs, a student commons, and a new performing arts facility. Varsity athletic contests are played at a nearby community recreational center with some of the finest facilities in the Southeast.
In December of 2012, Houston Academy became a “MacBook School,” issuing MacBook Pros to all students in grades 5-12. Students in the lower grades have access to interactive smart board technology, as well as iPads. In addition, all teachers are issued MacBooks, and teachers teaching grades K5-4 are issued iPads.
Enrollment is currently approximately 700 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten/3 through 12. Enrollment for the school is at a historic high.
