Duke School offers an exceptional project-based learning environment that seeks to develop high-level analytical and critical thinking skills in all its students. This focus complements explicit instruction in the core academic disciplines of mathematics, science, social sciences, Spanish, and English. This engaging and rigorous approach to educating middle school students is implemented by a collaborative team of four teachers at each grade level. Middle school at Duke School comprises grades 5-8, with each grade enrolling approximately 50 students.
Duke School is committed to equity and justice and aspires to be a community where every member feels engaged, heard, and valued. We embrace the contributions of all community members as we foster a culture of respect. Sharing perspectives and experiences beyond our own boundaries through exploration, introspection, and civil discourse is integral to our mission of creating an inclusive learning environment.
We are seeking exceptional Middle School math and project teachers for the 2026-2027 school year, with a sound understanding of best practices in teaching and working with adolescents. Responsibilities include leading an advisory of 11-13 students daily; delivering math curriculum in three classes of 16-17 students; and collaborating with a team of teachers to design, deliver, and evaluate three projects during the year. The ideal candidate will have an education degree and at least three years of teaching experience. A deep understanding of middle school philosophy and a commitment to the academic and social/emotional growth of students is essential. Working collaboratively on a team is critical for success in this position.
Please email your resume, including a list of references, and a cover letter to teach@dukeschool.org. See the full job description here. Diverse candidates are encouraged to apply. Compensation is commensurate with experience and abilities and reflective of local salary levels.
Duke School, located in Durham, N.C., serves approximately 500 students from Preschool through Grade 8 in a nationally recognized, project-based learning environment. Set in the heart of the Research Triangle—one of the country’s most dynamic regions for education, healthcare, and innovation—Duke School benefits from a vibrant, growing community with deep intellectual and cultural resources.
Organized into Early Childhood (Preschool–Kindergarten), Lower School (Grades 1–4), and Middle School (Grades 5–8), the school is defined by its use of the Project Approach—an inquiry-driven model that develops analytical thinking, deep research, and collaborative problem-solving from the earliest years. Students engage in sustained, in-depth investigations that culminate in meaningful presentations reflecting strong student voice, agency, and joyful collaboration. Duke School also prioritizes a strong social curriculum and a community grounded in respect, inclusion, and engagement, supported by a distinctive staffing model of two teachers in every classroom.
