Oakwood School is seeking a dedicated, innovative, and nurturing Classroom Teacher (grades 5-6) to join the team for the 2025-2026 school year.
Oakwood serves bright students in grades 1-8 with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. Our approach centers on small class sizes, multisensory teaching, and individualized instruction. Each classroom has two teachers for 10-13 homeroom students, allowing for differentiated instruction and a collaborative work environment. With approximately 120 students, 22 classroom teachers, and a robust team of academic coaches and leaders, we are committed to fostering a supportive environment for students and staff.
As an Oakwood Classroom teacher, you will:
Team-teach science or social studies to a class of approximately 13 students.
Independently teach reading, writing, and math to a small group of up to 7 students.
Foster strong relationships with students and families through regular communication and progress updates.
Participate in weekly collaboration meetings with cohort teachers and academic leadership to ensure cohesive and effective instruction.
Prepare student progress reports on a monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual basis.
Physical and Environmental Considerations:
Teaching at Oakwood involves an active, dynamic environment. Teachers may engage in activities such as standing, walking, kneeling, and bending, both indoors and outdoors. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
What we're looking for:
Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Required: 2-3 years of teaching experience in special education or working with students with learning differences at the upper elementary or middle school level.
Preferred: Virginia Teaching License, or eligibility to obtain one, with an endorsement in special education.
Preferred: Master's degree in special education or related field.
Preferred: Orton-Gillingham training or certification.
Oakwood School has been serving students in 1st through 8th grades with specific learning disabilities in the DC Metro area since 1971. As a special education school, we serve students with mild to moderate learning differences through systematic, explicit, and direct instruction.
