General Summary: The Orchestra Teacher provides music instruction to all orchestra students by nurturing music abilities, encouraging creative expression, and creating a positive learning environment for music education. Through engaging instruction and high expectations, the teacher fosters technical proficiency, musical expression, and teamwork. Prioritizing a student-centered approach and creating an inclusive environment is essential. This position is for the upcoming 2026-27 school year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan, organize, and deliver engaging instruction in string instruments and orchestral performance.
Select appropriate repertoire that reflects a variety of styles, cultures, and levels of difficulty.
Enhance the musical education of all students by using appropriate techniques, instruments, strategies, technology, and other materials to achieve the desired instructional goal.
Provide instruction by which students develop musical concepts, music reading skills, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about music.
Adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities, as well as provide accommodations through a variety of instructional approaches.
Provide feedback to students in a manner that enhances learning and understanding.
Evaluate each student’s performance and growth and communicate progress with parents and students.
Plan and present all-inclusive music programs and exhibitions designed to showcase the work of the students to the school and the community in solo, chamber, and full ensemble.
Establishes high expectations for preparation, behavior, and ensemble culture.
Attend and participate in department meetings, including collaborative teams and attend after school meetings as required.
Work collaboratively with the band and chorus directors for the betterment of the department.
Prepare students for WSMA music contests.
Seek professional development to ensure lifelong learning.
Manage program logistics, including instrument inventory, equipment care, and music experiences.
Direct Upper School and, or Middle School Pit Orchestra as needed for an additional stipend.
Complete other tasks as deemed appropriate by the administration.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in performing and teaching string instruments.
Ability to serve as a conductor with strong stick technique and rehearsal practices.
Proficient in performing and reading music.
Secure knowledge of best practices in music instruction, and the ability to utilize a variety of resources for each instructional level.
Ability to plan for and execute multi-grade level concerts.
Ability to differentiate instruction for varying skill levels, learning styles, and developmental stages.
Strong classroom management skills.
Ability and the desire to work with a diverse student population.
Ability to work collaboratively with others and maintain positive professional relationships.
Ability to read, comprehend, follow and give oral and written instructions.
Excellent writing and communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills with a strong degree of self-direction and motivation.
High level of maturity, including the ability to respect confidentiality with sensitive concerns.
Capable of using tact and diplomacy in dealing with others.
Capable of competently operating technology.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in music or music education preferred.
WI DPI music license 506 (instrumental music) preferred.
