Harvard-Westlake School seeks an exceptional and highly qualified educator to join the English Department as a full-time Middle School English Teacher for the 2026–27 school year. The position begins in August 2026.
Harvard-Westlake’s Middle School includes grades 7, 8, and 9. Candidates should have the interest, flexibility, and capacity to teach across all three grade levels. English teachers design and lead inquiry-driven explorations of English and World Literature, guide students through the process of composing, revising, and refining analytical writing, and support students in developing clear, thoughtful, and expressive spoken and written language.
While this is primarily an English teaching position, the full teaching load may include a course outside of the English Department—such as journalism, public speaking, debate, creative writing, or ethics—based on departmental and programmatic needs.
About the Department
The English Department values collaboration, shared purpose, and collegial engagement. Departmental work includes:
Coordinating closely with colleagues teaching common courses
Collaborating on the design, refinement, and implementation of shared curricula
Adhering to department- and course-level norms, including:
Use of common texts and curricular frameworks
Shared skills benchmarks and assessment practices
Common rubrics and grading norms
Aligned pacing across course teams
Faculty Responsibilities Beyond the Classroom
All full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in the broader life of the school.
Responsibilities include:
Chaperoning a grade-level retreat in October
Leading an advisory or supervising lunch (twice in the 8-day cycle)
Engaging in school life through admissions, student clubs, affinity groups, service, and other community programs
We’re Looking for Candidates Who Demonstrate:
A Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
Experience teaching middle or high school English in a literature-based, writing-intensive curriculum
A student-centered approach that actively engages student voice
Skill in facilitating collaborative, discussion-based classes
Strong teamwork, organization, and collegiality
A deep commitment to subject expertise and the craft of teaching
Clear and thoughtful communication with students and colleagues
Enthusiasm for becoming an engaged member of a vibrant school community
Harvard-Westlake is an independent school with two campuses in Los Angeles and approximately 1,600 students enrolled in grades 7–12. Our students are curious, thoughtful, and inspiring young people who engage deeply with both academic and co-curricular life.
We are dedicated to fostering a community of belonging and continually advancing diversity and inclusion across all aspects of school life. We do not discriminate on any basis. We seek candidates who bring sensitivity, understanding, and respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds; who can work collaboratively and independently in a dynamic environment; and who exemplify professionalism, openness, and generosity in their interactions with students and colleagues.
