Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 40 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C. As one of the finest PK-8 schools in the country, Norwood sets the bar high and is committed to educating the whole child in a diverse, student-centered, challenging, and nurturing environment, which continually promotes equity, inclusion, and cultural competence.
Norwood’s child-centered education and its very intentional emphasis on being a happy place of learning create an environment where each individual child is loved, nurtured, challenged, and truly known. As a result, children flourish at Norwood. They love learning; they are creative and critical thinkers. They are confident in who they are, and they feel safe taking risks. They are kind and caring people, who, fueled by our motto, How you lead your life matters, make helping others a priority in their lives. At the end of their eighth-grade year, our graduates leave Norwood exceptionally well-prepared for high school and empowered to make positive contributions to our world.
Norwood has an opening for an experienced and dynamic Kindergarten Homeroom Teacher starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. Kindergarten teachers at Norwood create and maintain a loving, nurturing, joyful, and child-centered learning environment in which children are challenged, encouraged, and supported. The ideal candidate will be responsible for working with their co-teacher to plan, instruct, and assess reading/language arts, math, and social studies in their homeroom; to integrate lessons about character throughout the curriculum; and to deliver differentiated instruction for a wide range of abilities and interests. They are also comfortable and excited about using technology for teaching and learning. Kindergarten teachers will also collaborate regularly with specialists who teach art, library, music, physical education, science, and Spanish.
Applicants must have at least three years of experience working with students in lower elementary grades or early childhood settings. Training in phonics instruction is preferred. Strong applicants will have a demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse, inclusive school setting with a child-centered pedagogy. Additional qualifications include excellent communication skills, flexibility, a sense of humor, and a love for working with children.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to Fielding Winters, Head of Lower School, at fwinters@norwoodschool.org. No phone calls, please.
Norwood School does not discriminate in employment opportunities or practices on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by law.
Norwood School’s mission is to ensure that each of its students grows intellectually, morally, physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually, while preparing to function productively and generously in our pluralistic society. Norwood’s challenging educational program and broad-based activities are designed to help students experience joy in learning, develop self-confidence, and learn respect for the rights and feelings of others. Embracing diversity is integral to the School’s tradition that both recognizes the worth of each member of the community and emphasizes the common values of academic achievement, mutual respect, cooperation, and personal responsibility.
