The K-8 Librarian and Media Specialist supports Speyer’s mission, goals, and vision; values community; brings a spirit of enthusiasm and energy; and is willing to take thoughtful initiative in a collaborative setting with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
The Library program aims to support the curricula of Speyer by providing students and teachers with access to print and digital materials that will enhance, supplement, and reinforce their classroom work. The Librarian is an essential member of the faculty, responsible for maintaining and enhancing the library resources and fostering a love of reading among students.
Reporting to the Lower and Middle School Division Heads, the Librarian serves as the main point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and families in their interactions with the library. Working in partnership with Lower School and Middle School Teachers, Learning Specialists, and Division Heads, the Librarian will manage the library's daily operations and provide essential support to the school community.
Librarian Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain the physical library space to serve and support all students making sure it is a welcoming and accessible space for all.
Curate, maintain, and catalog the K-8 print and digital collections, as well as all digital subscriptions and online research tools, in support of the K-8 curriculum and learning needs of all students, including shelving, weeding, and creating engaging displays to promote resources.
Organize the print and digital collections and subscriptions for maximum and effective use for all students, including providing access to e-books, digital subscriptions, and research tools and databases.
Maintain the online sites for all members of the community to easily access the library catalog, the digital library collection, and online research tools and digital subscriptions. This includes the Middle School Schoology page, Lower School Landing Pages, links to digital subscriptions, and online reading programs including EPIC! and Sora.
Partner with the Technology Department to ensure all digital subscriptions, resources, and tools are maintained and any technology issues are addressed.
Consistently promote fiction and non-fiction literacy, media literacy, and enjoyment of reading.
Teach Lower School (K-4) library classes which include:
Class read-aloud with related activities and discussion
Library skills lessons and literature appreciation
Book talks; advise students on book selections for personal reading
Class book recommendations and discussions
Other areas such as research skills and projects as determined through collaboration with homeroom teachers
Teach Middle School (5-8) library skills classes which include:
Library skills lessons and literature appreciation
Media literacy instruction, activities, and curricular support
Newbery Challenge
Research skills, including:
How to find information in both print and digital sources
How to assess sources as reputable and reliable
How to find and format citation information
Collaborate with faculty on research projects and ensure relevant and sufficient print and digital resources are available for student use.
Collaborate with teachers to provide support and guidance on effective research strategies, including finding, utilizing, and citing appropriate and reliable print and digital sources.
Conduct book clubs for Lower and Middle School students.
Provided “Readers Advisory” for all K-8 students, advising them of reading choices.
Arrange and coordinate logistics for Book Talks and Author Visits in support of the school’s curriculum.
Partner with the Parents’ Association to run biannual Book Fairs.
Maintain memberships in school library associations.
Actively build a professional learning network by attending professional development conferences and stay up to date with library listservs, blogs, book reviews, media technology and resources, and school library publications.
Create the summer reading lists and holiday reading lists for each age group.
Actively seek out and incorporate diverse perspectives and experiences into the library's collection and programming to create an inclusive environment.
Work with school leadership to make use of various funding sources such as FAMIS.
Other Faculty Duties and Responsibilities may include:
Middle School Advisor, as needed
Middle School Book Club Elective, as needed
Lunch, Morning, and Dismissal Duties, as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required.
Masters Degree and/or experience in Education or Library Science or related field preferred.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States
Salary Range
The annual salary range for this full-time position is $77,250-$122,000. The position on the scale will be based on years of experience and education.
