OVERVIEW The Maine School of Science & Mathematics, Maine's STEM magnet school offering a challenging curriculum in a supportive residential setting, invites applications for a full-time Mathematics Instructor to begin in August, 2025. This is an opportunity to join an outstanding faculty engaging students with high academic potential in an exciting learning environment.
MSSM Mathematics faculty provide a strong foundation in traditional high school mathematics, and beyond. The School’s curriculum has all students completing Calculus prior to graduation, and many complete courses such as Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and/or more advanced Mathematics topics.
POSITION DESCRIPTION The Mathematics Instructor will be responsible for teaching four sections of mathematics, likely a mixture of beginning and advanced courses to highly motivated students. Full-time faculty are also responsible for teaching a two-week January Term course and advising one student club or activity.
RESPONSIBILITIES Instruction: Teach four (4) high-quality, student-centered mathematics classes (planned fall 2025 classes will be one section each of Accelerated Before Calculus BC, Accelerated AP Calculus BC, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra); Math Team: Assist other Math faculty with supervising MSSM’s Math Team; J-Term: Design and teach a two-week January-Term course (instructor’s choice of topics); Club Sponsorship: Serve as advisor to a student-led club; Advising: Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, acting as the primary point of contact between advisees' parents and the school; Communication: Communicate in a professional and timely manner to students and parents concerning student academic performance; Collaboration: Collaborate with a world-class teaching team, emphasizing shared objectives and connections; and Professionalism: Exhibit professionalism within and outside the program, acting as an enthusiastic cheerleader for Maine’s nationally-ranked, magnet high school.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS An M.A. in mathematics or a related field; At least three years of successful Mathematics teaching experience at the secondary and/or post-secondary level; The ability to offer a rigorous, but supportive, classroom experience; Creative and cutting edge, with the ability to inspire students; Excellent communication and organizational skills, and a willingness and desire to work with inquisitive and quirky high school students in a close-knit, residential community.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS A terminal degree in Mathematics or a related field and minimum 7 years of teaching experience.
