Position Summary: A History and Social Science teacher at Forman School plays an integral role in helping students think about history, society, and the role of individuals in shaping the world. The ideal candidate would be versed in elements of both Western and non-Western history and have a facility with one or more areas of the social sciences (economics, geography, psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, political science). The ideal candidate should be forward-thinking in their pedagogical outlook and interested in the entire educational process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists students in understanding how history is written/constructed and the role of historiography
Immerse students in a diverse, robust, and experiential learning experience that promotes deeper thinking and involves grappling with the complex issues of history
Develop curricula that help students understand the role of history and the social sciences in analyzing their world locally, nationally, and globally.
Facilitates student learning in one or more fields of the social sciences beyond history
Promotes a humanities and/or interdisciplinary approach to various topics in the classroom
Ability to collaborate with teachers across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary curricula and projects
Nurtures discipline-based literacies, developing in students strong oral, reading, and writing skills
Develops students as researchers
Fosters an environment in which students learn to think critically and independently
Provides consistent, timely, and constructive feedback in both writing and verbal forms
Communicates effectively with a variety of different constituencies in writing and verbally
Demonstrates patience and empathy with adolescents and focuses on fully developing well-rounded individuals
Implements best practices to support the needs of diverse learners
Serves the needs of the students through residential, extracurricular, and co-curricular programs. Individual duties may vary, but will likely include the following:
Primary or relief dorm parent
Advisor
Coach
Chaperone weekend activities as part of a rotating duty schedule
Assist in clubs and/or various school programs
Other Expectations: This position is a member of a boarding school faculty. Candidates should be interested in contributing outside of the classroom and becoming fully involved in the student life program. Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of School life.
JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
3+ years of teaching experience in history or the social sciences.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in history, a social science, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
Student-centered educator, skilled in facilitating student discussion and collaboration.
Experience in curriculum design and innovative teaching practices.
Ability to write clearly and effectively in a variety of formats.
Strong verbal skills.
Experience working with students with different learning styles.
Ability to engage parents and create healthy relationships with students.
