Bay Ridge Prep, a student-centered, K-12 independent school located in Brooklyn, New York, seeks an outstanding educator to join its Middle School faculty as a 7th and 8th-grade social studies teacher. The successful candidate will have the skills and experience to effectively teach students with a range of learning profiles and will have an understanding of multiple intelligences and differentiated instruction. Applicants must also demonstrate effective classroom management skills in a learning environment that emphasizes problem-solving, effective oral and written communication, collaboration and leadership, intrinsic motivation, initiative and persistence, and the ability to access and analyze information.
This ten-month, full-time, in-person position follows the school’s academic calendar. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm; faculty meetings occur on Tuesdays from 2:50 pm to 4 pm. Evening (e.g., Parent-teacher meetings) and weekend work may be required as job duties demand them and will be scheduled in advance. This position reports to the Middle School Director and Head of School.
Responsibilities
Implementation of the 7th and 8th-grade social studies curriculum
Collaboration with the Middle School faculty team and social studies department
Role as an Advisor helping with the social and emotional development of students, establishing strong teacher-student relationships, and providing time for implementation of The Social Institute digital curriculum
Providing extra student support as needed, including running a weekly SS Learning Lab for each class
Adherence to all grading and assessment deadlines and requirements as determined by the administration, including a Fall mid-trimester progress note and narrative-style report cards three times a year
Actively demonstrating a passion for Middle School teaching and the celebration of young minds
Conduct parent-teacher conferences twice a year (can run into evening hours)
Attendance at weekly faculty meetings and professional development days
Lunch, reading, and recess supervision duties
Qualifications
3-5 years teaching experience with 4th-8th graders, preferably in a private/independent school and in the subject of social studies or humanities, and a Master’s Degree or above
Capacity for teaching students at different learning levels and with learning differences
Excellent organizational skills
Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
A sense of humor and an appreciation for the ups and downs of middle schoolers

Work Environment and Physical Demands
This job requires the ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate the school environment and ensure the safety of the students, and the ability to perform typical classroom and school-related physical activities, with or without reasonable accommodation. Classroom locations vary based on student schedules and staff may need to teach from different rooms. This role routinely uses standard classroom and office equipment such as computers, phones, electronic devices, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc. Occasional travel between school buildings is required, scheduled with advanced notice, and the school buildings are within walking distance from each other. Accompanying students to the park and supervising activities is also required.
