Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks an experienced voice instructor specializing in Musical Theater vocal technique for advanced high school student theater majors for the 2025-2026 academic year beginning in September 2025. Soprano or Mezzo Soprano preferred.

Lessons are conducted during school hours between 9 AM and 6 PM Monday-Friday. Specific teaching days and hours will be scheduled at the start of each semester, based on both student and teacher availability, in consultation with the Head of Voice and the Director of Theater. Candidates should be available to teach approximately 8 - 12 students, over two or three days per week during the school year, when school is in session. Candidates should have some flexibility to adjust their teaching schedule on occasion and to offer makeup lessons according to school policy.

Responsibilities Include:

• Provide weekly Private Voice Lessons for 8 - 12 students, depending on enrollment and teacher availability; lessons are 50 minutes for 11th/12th grade students and 25 minutes for 9th/10th grade students;
• Prepare students for auditions and performances on campus and beyond;
• Support specific repertoire assignments, theater curriculum, and role preparation in collaboration with an as directed by the Director of Theater, the Head of Voice, and theater faculty;
• Assign appropriate repertoire in a range of vocal styles including classical, golden age, contemporary music theater, pop and other commercial styles, depending on theater department curriculum as well as students' needs, goals and interests; 
• Help students maintain or achieve vocal health (misuse and overuse prevention, vocal health assessment, and rehabilitation support if needed), as well as being attuned to the general well-being of the student;
• Communicate regularly with Head of Voice, Program Director and/or Academic Advisor about student progress or student concerns or curriculum or departmental needs;
• Track lesson attendance, maintain personal schedule and make adjustments as needed.
• Attend voice faculty meetings and HR trainings when needed (paid time);
• Show student support by attending their performances whenever possible; and
• Participate in an end-of-year voice jury to provide constructive feedback to all voice students.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance or Musical Theater or equivalent experience;
• Minimum 3+ years private teaching experience (independent or institutional) with expertise and particular interest in training teen voices;
• Professional performance experience in musical theater or classical music.
• Demonstrated excellence as a vocalist, interpreter of song and character, and as a teacher, with students demonstrating marked growth and success (reflected in casting, competitions, summer program and college program admittance, etc.)
• Well-versed in the specific skills and styles required for industry-standard theater repertoire, and to build foundational technical vocal skills to support those styles; (Including golden age, legit, contemporary, belt, belt-mix, pop/rock, etc.). Additional strength or specialty in Contemporary Commercial or Traditional Classical vocal styles are a plus. 
• Ability to work well with ambitious high school students and be attuned to their specific developmental needs;
• Possess thorough understanding of the audition and admission process for select college/conservatory theater programs
• Possess appropriate piano skills to support vocalizing, repertoire learning and repertoire accompaniment during lessons;
• Ability to teach students ranging in experience from beginner to advanced with equity - students of any level should expect to grow and improve with this instruction;
• Offer understanding and encouragement to busy, ambitious students, while helping them improve technical skill, discipline, preparation, artistry and confidence.

• Experience and interest in teaching group voice class
• Experience as music director

Physical Demands:

Physical demands include dexterity for department specific tools and equipment, and office machine and supply operation including but not limited to: writing, typing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and printers. Ability and dexterity to practice and demonstrate your artistic discipline. Stooping, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly through language and physical demonstration required.

Rate of Pay:

• This is an hourly, adjunct position
• Pay rate of $80 per 50-minute lesson
• Extras: free parking and free breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner when on campus, and 2 comp tickets to all Walnut Hill performances
