Position Summary
The School Nurse serves as the primary healthcare provider for the Chapin School community, supporting the health, safety, and well-being of students from PreK through Grade 8. Reporting to the Head of School, the School Nurse manages the health office, administers first aid and medication, maintains student health records, and partners closely with families, faculty, and outside providers to ensure each student can fully participate in school life.
This is a full-time, 10-month position following the school calendar.
Key Responsibilities
Health Office Management
Maintain a well-organized, welcoming health office that serves as a reliable resource for students and staff
Respond promptly to student illnesses and injuries, providing first aid and determining appropriate next steps
Administer medications per physician orders and school policy, maintaining accurate records
Maintain current, compliant health records for all students, including immunization documentation and emergency contact information
Student Health & Wellness
Collaborate with families and outside providers to support students with medical needs
Monitor and assess student health trends; communicate concerns to families and administrators with care and clarity
Support student mental health and wellness in coordination with school counselor
Community Health & Compliance
Ensure compliance with all New Jersey Department of Health regulations for school health services
Manage communicable disease reporting and response in coordination with local health authorities
Maintain CPR/AED training records for applicable staff; lead drills and health-related staff training as needed
Support health education initiatives for students and families
Partnership & Communication
Build trusting, compassionate relationships with students, families, and faculty
Communicate with families in a timely and professional manner regarding student health concerns
Participate as an engaged member of the school community, including attendance at relevant faculty meetings and school events
Qualifications
Required
Current New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN) license
New Jersey School Nurse Certificate (or eligibility to obtain)
Current CPR/AED certification
Experience working with children; school nursing or pediatric setting preferred
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities calmly and effectively
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a warm, reassuring presence with children and families
Preferred
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing
National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) credential
Experience in an independent school environment
Familiarity with health record systems and electronic health management platforms
