Charlotte Latin School seeks an Assistant Director of Bands to begin in August 2026
Charlotte Latin’s Band Program is part of the Performing Arts Department and serves students in Grades 5-12. The program is divided into three developmental stages: beginning band (Grades 5-6), intermediate band (Grades 7-8), and advanced band (Grades 9-12). The program is staffed by two full-time educators: Director of Bands and Assistant Director of Bands. The bands perform two concerts annually and participate in Music Performance Adjudication events as needed.
The state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center is home to the 715-seat Thies Auditorium, Anne’s Black Box Theater, the Downer Art Gallery, along with music ensemble rooms, practice studios, and a full costume and scene shop.
Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Bands include:
Serve as the lead teacher in beginning band (Grades 5-6)
Assist in intermediate and advanced bands (Grades 7-12)
Prepare ensembles for winter and spring concerts
Assist the Upper School Pep Band in preparation and performance for limited engagements at home football games
Assist in providing students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with any North Carolina Band Master requirements.
Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
Maintain instrument inventory and music library
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Performing Arts
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in music with a concentration in instrumental music is required, with strong preference for Master's degree
Experience teaching in middle and high school grade levels
A minimum of three years of teaching music in a school setting is required

Working Conditions and Environment
Intermittently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds.
Continuously see, sit, balance, grasp, and have repetitive use of arms, wrists, hands, and fingers; and some fine finger dexterity.
Frequently talk and hear.
Intermittently stand, stoop, bend, twist, crouch, kneel, crawl, walk, climb stairs, step stools and ladders, operate foot and hand controls, squeeze, and reach above shoulders.
Exposure to dust, chemicals, fumes, flammables, grease, dirt, stacked materials, electrical equipment, machinery, low to medium noise levels, and moderate indoor heat and cold temperatures.
