Role and Purpose:
The Reading Specialist plays a vital role in supporting students in grades K–4 by providing targeted instruction to strengthen reading comprehension, decoding, fluency, and accuracy. In addition to addressing the needs of students requiring additional support, the Reading Specialist designs enrichment opportunities for advanced readers to further challenge and engage them. This position serves as a key resource for teachers, parents, and administrators, fostering collaboration and promoting best practices in literacy development across the lower school.
Responsibilities:
Administer and interpret reading inventories and assessments for K–4 students
Use data from assessments to plan and deliver individualized and small-group instruction
Provide targeted intervention for students with reading challenges, including those with dyslexia, using multi-sensory approaches
Collaborate with classroom teachers to design and implement effective reading strategies and supports
Develop and deliver enrichment opportunities for students who demonstrate advanced reading abilities
Maintain clear and consistent communication with parents, teachers, and administrators regarding student progress and instructional plans
Maintain accurate records of student progress and instructional interventions
Act as a self-starter in identifying student needs and proactively addressing them
Contribute to the overall school community through collaboration, communication, and a commitment to student success
Create a rigorous routine, considering each teacher’s schedule, in order to maximize time with all students needing service
Engage actively with the Oakridge community by participating in events, providing support to students, and promoting the school positively in all communications
Engage in and seek out professional development opportunities that contribute to the ongoing growth and evolution of classroom teaching
Other duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School and Head of the Early Childhood Center
A Qualified Candidate Will Possess:
Bachelor’s Degree, in the field of Education, Reading, Literacy, or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred)
Reading Specialist Certification
Certification and experience in multi-sensory reading instruction (e.g. Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Take Flight, or similar)
A minimum of three (3) years’ demonstrated experience in teaching reading to elementary-aged students
Must pass a criminal background check and have positive verification of references
