Jewish Community High School of the Bay
Help students wrestle with Talmud, explore Jewish ethics, and build Jewish community at San Francisco's pluralistic Jewish high school.
We are seeking a full time educator who cares deeply about teaching in a pluralistic environment, thinks hard about how Jewish texts are relevant to students’ lives, recognizes the role Jewish literacy plays in identity building, enjoys creating an inspirational classroom environment, and curating meaningful Jewish life experiences beyond the classroom. Qualified candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Jewish Community High School of the Bay (JCHS) seeks a full-time educator to serve as both a Jewish Studies teacher and a Jewish Life educator, integrating engaging text study with vibrant communal Jewish experiences. This role is ideal for an educator who believes that Jewish learning happens both inside and outside the classroom, and who is excited to help students explore Jewish ideas, values, and practices in a pluralistic environment.
The position is about 50% classroom teaching and 50% Jewish and Student Life programming. Meaning that this role is designed for an educator who thrives at the intersection of authentic text study and experiential community building.
When you join JCHS you will:
teach 2 classes described below
serve as a key member of the Jewish & Student Life Team as described below
have time during the school day to prepare great lessons and give students the individual help they need
be supported by a faculty supervisor, learning specialist, school counselor, and a supervising director of Jewish & Student life
work alongside colleagues who will both push you to be a better educator and team members who welcome your help in improving their craft
work with supportive administrators who encourage innovative teaching, expect professional growth, embrace research based pedagogy, and value authentic experiential learning
be directly involved in creating an inclusive and equitable environment toward differentiating your teaching, and honoring the diverse Jewish identities of our students
As a pluralistic Jewish high school, JCHS’ students represent the diversity of Jewish practice and identity in the Bay Area. We believe our students learn best from a diverse faculty and extended professional community and welcome people of any race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation and marital status to come work with our students.
Compensation
At JCHS salaries are one component of a compensation package that includes retirement contributions, daily Kosher lunch, on-site parking, health, dental, vision, and life/AD&D insurance. The anticipated full-time annual base salary range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the position of a Jewish Studies Teacher is $70,000-$115,000 – a broad range dependent on factors such as the candidate’s years of professional experience, advanced training, and progressive leadership experience, with additional stipends available for advanced degrees and certain additional duties.
Jewish Studies Teaching Responsibilities
You will teach, at least, two Jewish Studies courses:
One Advanced Talmud course
One text-rich Jewish Ethics/Jewish Philosophy elective course
In this role, you will:
teach Jewish texts in ways that are intellectually rigorous, accessible, and relevant to students’ lives
foster Jewish literacy as a tool for identity development and ethical reflection
create an engaging, inclusive classroom environment that honors the diverse Jewish backgrounds of JCHS students
support students in developing skills in close reading, critical thinking, discussion, and academic writing
collaborate with Jewish Studies colleagues on curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment
work with learning specialists, counselors, and administrators to support student success
Jewish & Student Life Responsibilities (Approximately 50%)
As a key member of the Jewish and Student Life Team, you will help design, facilitate, and support meaningful Jewish communal experiences, including:
Leading/supporting the daily shacharit mechitza minyan
Acting as the mashgi-ach/cha for the annual Shabbaton (preferred but not required)
Supporting planning and logistics for these schoolwide Jewish and Student Life programs:
9th Grade Orientation
Senior Buddy training in preparation of Senior Buddies facilitating the 9th Grade Orientation
All-School Shabbaton (all students and all educators/staff)

Student government–led programs (e.g., Spirit Week, school dances)
Supporting grade-wide trips, including staffing at least one trip per year
Actively contributing at weekly Jewish and Student Life Team meetings
Building strong relationships with students through presence, mentorship, and informal engagement

Experience working with teens in educational or communal settings
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to collaborate effectively and flexibly on teams
Bachelor’s degree
Eligibility to work in the United States
Interest in teaching and programming in a pluralistic Jewish environment
