New Canaan Country School is a co-ed, independent day school for students in Pre-K (ages 3 & 4) through Grade 9 living in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. Located in New Canaan, CT, and serving 570 students, our mission is to guide students to reach their intellectual, creative, moral, and physical potential. The Upper School at Country School serves students in Grades 7 through 9 and provides them with the opportunity to acquire habits of mind and dispositions, including collaboration, analytical and critical thinking, communication, perseverance and risk-taking. The school is now searching for an Upper School Math Teacher and Math Department Chair to join its faculty in August 2026.

Responsibilities

• Conduct a standard load (typically 4 sections) of mathematics courses in Grades 7-9, including planning, instruction, assessment, and reporting as well as being accessible and available to students for support during designated times
• Serve as an advisor to a group of Upper School students within a grade-level advisory team
• Serve as head or assistant coach to Upper School teams in multiple seasons
• Fulfill additional student-facing responsibilities of Upper School faculty members, including recess, study hall, clubs and multi-day trips
• Engage in faculty meetings and professional development programs at department, team, division and whole school levels
• Provides leadership for the department by facilitating collaboration, guiding curriculum alignment and assessment practices, and supporting professional growth. 
  • Advance math teaching and learning best practices through systematic documentation, review, and ideation around addressing gaps and opportunities and improving upon currently successful program designs
  • Research and recommend internal and external professional development experiences based on focus derived from the meetings and activities in between
  • Advise divisional leadership on sectioning, scheduling, and placement as appropriate
  • Visit classes in service of observation and feedback via a structured coverage/release system
  • Help shape personnel by participating in hiring procedures for program area

Requirements

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
• Relevant experience teaching and assessing student learning in Grades 6-9
• Ability to teach Pre-algebra through Algebra II/Precalculus
• Ability to connect with students at the middle school age level (12-15 years old)
