Assistant Director of Communications
One Schoolhouse is looking for a proactive, strategic Assistant Director of Communications to lead communications across our two primary programs: our One Schoolhouse Program for students and the Association for Academic Leaders. This hands-on role will focus on communicating how One Schoolhouse supports independent schools in delivering on their mission.
You’ll develop messaging, campaigns, and materials that connect our programs and services to the challenges and opportunities schools face, making a clear, compelling case for why One Schoolhouse is a trusted partner. Reporting to the COO and working closely with our small team, you’ll shape and implement communication strategies that drive engagement with our programs
Key Responsibilities Communication Strategy & Execution
Develop and implement a communications plan that advances our strategic goals and elevates brand awareness around our Academic Program and the Association for Academic Leaders.
Craft and deliver messaging that is tailored to independent school leaders and illustrates how our programs address their needs, including emails, web content, collateral, presentations, and social media.
Connecting Our Work to Schools’ Needs
Translate One Schoolhouse’s offerings into clear, school-centered messaging that resonates with independent school priorities like a rich and varied curriculum, student-centered learning, academic excellence, and strong and inspiring leadership.
Develop communications and materials that help Academic Leaders understand how our programs can help them tackle current challenges and future opportunities.
Shape a clear, actionable “vision of value” that supports partnership conversations and sustained relationships.
Content Development & Design
Write polished copy and design visual assets for all communications channels using tools like Canva, ensuring brand consistency and visual appeal.
Maintain an up-to-date editorial calendar and manage all campaign assets and deadlines across programs.
Serve as a liaison between team members and communications support, creating materials that help the Director of Partnerships and Account Manager advance school outreach, partnership, and retention.
Collaboration & Internal Support
Partner with colleagues across the Academic Program, Association, and Systems teams to align messaging with program priorities and timelines.
Actively seek input from team members and identify new opportunities to highlight the impact of our work with schools.
Support the ongoing improvement of our communications processes, tools, and data tracking.
Performance Measurement & Reporting
Track KPIs across email campaigns, web analytics, and social channels, using data to inform future communications and enhance engagement.
Prepare regular updates for leadership on communications performance, trends, and insights.
Qualifications
6–10 years of experience in communications, marketing, or a related field; experience with independent schools strongly preferred.
Proven ability to craft messages that connect offerings to audience needs and convey value clearly and convincingly.
Strong writing and editing skills: able to produce engaging, professional content in a clear and concise style.
Skilled with design tools like Canva and comfortable using CRM/email tools like Salesforce/Pardot to manage communications.
Self-directed and collaborative: able to take initiative in a small team and balance strategic planning with hands-on execution.
Status Full-time, Exempt
Compensation Package Benefits: Full-time employees are eligible to participate in the organization’s 403(b) plan, health and dental plans, and short-term and long-term disability insurance programs. Full-time employees are encouraged to use their twenty-four PTO days. In addition to annual PTO, the employee will have paid holidays in accordance with the organization’s annual calendar.
Salary Range $85,000–$95,000, commensurate with experience and geographic location.
Travel & Physical Requirements The Assistant Director will need to travel approximately 10% of the time. The position requires that a candidate should be able to work at a computer for long periods of time.
Location Either remote or in Washington, DC.
