The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 770 students K-12, welcomes candidates for a part-time position (32 hours) as Science Laboratory and Department Assistant beginning August 2025.
collaborating with and supporting a team of Science teachers in three divisions (K-12)
maintaining and organizing laboratory spaces and equipment
procuring and preparing materials for experiments and labs in the science curriculum
managing laboratory inventory and implementing sustainable disposal practices for unused items
coordinating the disposal of hazardous materials and waste from classroom experiments
monitoring laboratory safety by updating safety data sheets of chemicals and materials, and inspecting equipment regularly
keeping abreast of laboratory safety procedures and best practices
caring for the department’s animals (snails, snakes, crayfish, etc.) and plants
managing the department’s calendar, teacher schedules, room reservations, and general purchasing
assisting with the planning and execution of departmental events
The ideal candidate will:
show an interest in science; a bachelor’s degree in science is preferred
demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with teachers and staff
have knowledge of laboratory safety protocols
be familiar with basic scientific equipment and materials
attend to detail and commit to safety
possess excellent oral and written communication skills
exhibit the qualities of a self-starter and a team player
show competence in Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel
enjoy working with young people
demonstrate cultural competency

Salary
The hourly rate for this position is $30.00/hour for 32 hours per week. This is a 10-month position (mid-August to mid-June)
