Position Overview The Head of Lower School serves as the educational and administrative leader of the division, with comprehensive responsibility for students, faculty, programs, and parent relations. Reporting directly to the Head of School, this position is a core member of the administrative team alongside the Middle and Upper School Division Heads. This role offers the opportunity to shape an exciting and creative future for the program while building upon a tradition of success, innovation, and excellence, supported by an experienced, talented, cohesive, and dedicated faculty.
Responsibilities: • Serve as a member of the Administrative Team and as a community ambassador while supporting the goals of the Head of School and promoting the mission of the school. • Maintain a full-school, K-12 perspective and work seamlessly with the other Division Heads and Head of School for school vitality, advancement, and support of strategic initiatives beyond the division. • Support the school’s K-12 curriculum alignment and stay abreast of best practices; recommend changes as necessary. • Foster enrollment growth and retention in the Lower School and seamless student transition between divisions. • Be an active member of the Risk Management Team for school security and safety protocols. • Embrace neurodiversity in students and create and support initiatives to meet targeted needs in our student population. In conjunction with our on-site clinical psychologist, lead the Student Success Team to guide student, parent, and teacher supports. • Provide educational leadership for the Lower School and use research knowledge of advances and trends in pedagogy and education to determine, articulate, and plan for effective improvements to the student experience. • Be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Lower School in partnership with the Lower School Administrative Assistant. • Participate in programs for the orientation of new teachers, develop and implement in-service training of all teachers, and review and evaluate academic programs. • Observe, supervise, and evaluate faculty based upon the timeline and rubric in our Professional Growth and Evaluation System. Oversee, review, and make recommendations regarding staffing FTE’s and budget needs for the division. • Communicate regularly and effectively with school constituents. • With the After School Enrichment Coordinator, manage the activities, personnel, and scheduling of a robust ASE Program; support the initiatives and goals of various other SGS student and parent organizations and their activities. • Devise a master schedule and assign teachers and students to classes and other obligations. • Establish and enforce all policies of the division including clear communication of policies through the divisional handbook and curriculum guide. • Plan and lead staff in-service trainings and faculty meetings. • Oversee, review, and approve accurate monthly timecards for about 40 school employees prior to submitting to the payroll office. • Establish guidelines for proper student conduct; address student citizenship and discipline commensurate with our core values; maintain records of serious student infractions and resolutions. • Collaborate in the Lower School admission process by evaluating application materials, student visit days, and conversing with prospective parents as necessary. • Be present and assist at multiple Lower School cross country meets, fifth-grade basketball games, three chess tournaments hosted each year on campus, and other extracurricular activities.
Qualifications: • Master’s degree in educational administration, or equivalent, with a demonstrated interest in innovation and keeping at the forefront of educational trends. • Five years successful experience in academic leadership, preferably at the elementary school level. • Minimum of 5-10 years teaching experience in grades K-5. • Experience with the International Baccalaureate Programs preferred. • Clear and consistent management approach that focuses on the needs of the institution while understanding an individual’s particular context. • An accessible, flexible, and collegial leader who is warm, tactful, and respectful toward faculty, students, and parents. • An adept problem solver who consistently demonstrates the highest degree of confidentiality. • Excellent people manager, capable of building and motivating a cohesive team and challenging them to excel. • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead a diverse SGS community of teachers, staff, parents, and students. • Reflective practitioner of one’s own leadership practices. • Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Demonstrated enjoyment and understanding of children, patient as they strive to become their best selves. • Technology skills as they relate to the position.
