Steamboat Mountain School seeks a long-term substitute Lower School Humanities Teacher to join our Lower School team, with the potential for full-time employment beginning in the 2026–27 school year. Working closely with other members of the grade-level team, this educator will design curriculum and create a classroom environment in which each student feels like an integral part of the school community. The teacher will implement phonics programming, writing workshops, and literacy interventions and enrichments, while also communicating regularly and proactively with students, families, and colleagues. In addition to teaching, the educator will contribute positively to the overall school culture, fulfill duties such as recess and lunch supervision, and serve on school committees as requested or desired.Our teaching faculty engage students in active, inquiry-based learning, fostering confident, empathetic, and global learners who engage genuinely with others. We are looking for an educator who values student-centered teaching, differentiated instruction, and project-based approaches.
Key Responsibilities
Teach lower school humanities
Teach a section of enrichment or other co-curricular course as needed
Lead a daily Morning Meeting for a grade-level cohort
Develop and implement engaging, inquiry-based units aligned with SMS curriculum guides
Maintain accurate records of student growth and communicate regularly with families
Create and sustain a positive, student-centered classroom culture Participate in and help lead outdoor education trips (spring semester only)
Engage in supervisory duties, including recess and lunch coverage
Collaborate with colleagues and participate in faculty meetings
Qualifications
Experience teaching (3+ years preferred)
Strong classroom management and interpersonal skills
Flexibility and a collaborative mindset
Interest in outdoor and experiential education
Orton-Gillingham certification preferred but not required
