Position Overview
Hilton Head Preparatory School invites applications for a full-time Upper School English Teacher beginning August 2026. The ideal candidate is a student-centered, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable educator with demonstrated strength in AP English Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, and writing fundamentals necessary for creating a baseline for success for our freshman students. Additionally, the candidate must possess the ability to inspire curiosity, confidence, creativity, and critical thinking in young writers.

Deep content expertise in secondary English instruction
A passion for engaging students in the writing process
Ability to teach a range of courses from Freshman Fundamentals of Writing to AP Literature and Composition
Commitment to maintaining a rigorous, joyful, and supportive learning environment
Commitment to Prep’s Mission and Core Values
Willingness to be an active, visible presence in the school community
Candidates with experience in independent schools or with departmental leadership experience may be considered for Department Chair.
Key Responsibilities
Teach a full load of Upper School English courses at various levels, from foundational to AP.
Develop and deliver lessons that promote deep understanding, inquiry, critical thinking, and real-world application.
Collaborate with colleagues to evaluate and refine curriculum, sequencing, and assessment frameworks.
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and ensure all students experience success.
Communicate regularly with students and families to support academic growth and character development.
Maintain accurate records, assessments, and feedback using the school’s Blackbaud LMS.
Support departmental alignment and best practices in technology use, including responsible use of AI and Google Workplace applications.
Partner with the Learning Resource Specialist and academic leadership to support students of concern.
Pursue ongoing professional development and actively contribute to the growth of the English Department.
Serve as an Academic Advisor and participate in the life of the school through club sponsorships, extracurricular programs, athletics, or community service initiatives.
(If appointed as Department Chair): provide leadership in curriculum oversight, mentoring faculty, supporting new teachers, and advancing departmental initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or postgraduate work in English preferred.
Demonstrated success teaching high school English, including AP level courses.
Ability to inspire motivated students while supporting a range of learning styles.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and academically ambitious learning environment.
Technological proficiency related to English instruction (responsible use of AI, Google Workplace, etc.).
A passion for working with adolescents and contributing to their intellectual and personal growth.
