The Berkeley Carroll Middle and Upper School divisions seek an inspirational music teacher with an abiding passion to make the joy of musical performance accessible to as many students as possible are key qualities. This rare opportunity allows the director to guide students’ musical growth from their first notes in 5th and 6th through their final performance in 12th grade. Our award-winning musical program starts every fifth grader learning music directly on either a wind or string instrument. In upper school there is enthusiastic participation throughout a similar range of high-level, competitive ensemble and band offerings.
Responsibilities:
Teach 6th and 7th grade instrumental band classes, supporting students across a range of skill levels to develop tone production, technique, rhythm, small group, and ensemble playing.
Direct Middle School Wind Ensemble: build and grow a wind ensemble in middle school.
Direct Upper School Wind Ensemble: demonstrate strong expertise in wind ensemble repertoire, music theory, pep band literature, and effective music education pedagogy to successfully direct the Upper School wind ensemble.
Assist in Jazz ensemble rehearsals and sectional work
Assist with the maintenance and management of school-owned and rented woodwind instruments, and assist students with instrument care and minor adjustments.
Promote an environment of belonging where students feel seen, heard and valued in the ensemble.
Collaborate with members of the music department and performing arts department to ensure continuity in musical skills, expectations, and culture from middle to upper school.
Performances: Coordinating and collaborating with members of the music department to select repertoire, prepare students, and perform regularly scheduled performances as well as other community-facing events.
Curriculum Development: work with the music department to develop, review, and update music curriculum, syllabi, and learning outcomes.
Participate actively in the life of the school, including faculty meetings, professional development, leading an advisory, and community events.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Performance, or related field. An advanced degree in music would be advantageous.
A minimum of five years of experience working with beginning to advanced middle and/or high school instrumental students.
Proficiency in woodwind pedagogy (flute, clarinet, saxophone) and familiarity with brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, tuba) and percussion.
Excellent communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
A collaborative spirit and growth mindset, with a commitment to DEIB practices in music education.
Experience with music technology tools, such as notation software (Dorico, Sibelius, etc) is a benefit but not required.
Berkeley Carroll is committed to creating an environment that includes a diversity of perspectives and to cultivating an equitable, inclusive learning community in which everyone has a true sense of belonging. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to these values are especially encouraged to apply.
