Roycemore School is seeking a 1st grade teacher to cover a one-year maternity leave for the 2025-2026 school year. Founded in 1915, Roycemore is a highly regarded, co-educational independent school for students from 3 years old through 12th grade located in Evanston, Illinois, on the north side of Chicago.

Essential Functions
Develops curriculum, prepares materials and classrooms for class activities
Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet student’s varying needs and interests
Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, collaborate and investigate
Instructs students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods
Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicates those objectives to students
Prepares, administers, and assesses assignments and grade-level assessments in order to evaluate student’s progress
Uses effective class management techniques to ensure effective learning
Sponsors a student club and/or coaches an athletic team
Meets with parents and guardians to discuss their children’s progress, and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs
Provides a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play
Collaborates with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of Lower School programs
Maintains expertise in subject matter through professional development
Regularly attends faculty meetings
Communicates with families regularly via Class Dojo, newsletters, and as needed to promote the growth of each child.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Early Childhood and Lower School Division Head
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate work in subject matter and/or education
A minimum of three years of teaching experience at the grade of age level preferred, ideally in an independent school environment
Embraces implementing a multicultural classroom and a social-emotional curriculum
Experienced teaching Lucy Calkins’ reading and writing workshops preferred
Experience with project-based teaching
A strong passion for teaching and commitment to student learning and development
Excellence in classroom management techniques
Ability to interface and communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members
Enthusiasm for embracing the independent school model of mentoring, advising, and supporting students outside the classroom
Embraces authentic assessment, innovative pedagogies, and project-based learning
Enthusiasm for professional development
Comfortable using online texts, iPads, Learning Management Systems, and computer systems
Working knowledge of Macintosh operating systems
Experience with G-Suite (Google Apps) for Education (preferred)
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Commitment to inclusion and issues of social justice and equity
Ability to use basic office equipment
