Baker Demonstration School, an independent progressive PK-8 school on Chicago’s North Shore, is seeking an exemplary full time Math teacher for its Middle School program. We value candidates who are passionate about progressive education, have a love of students and teaching, and are innovative and knowledgeable about experiential learning. We place a high value on community and seek candidates who have excellent interpersonal skills who will work well with students, colleagues, and parents. This teaching position includes teaching math classes to middle school students and serving as an advisor to a group of middle school students. A full-time position includes curriculum development, participation in all professional development meetings, collaboration with colleagues, and additional responsibilities throughout the year that require attendance at evening and weekend school events.
Requirements
Knowledge and experience with progressive education philosophy and a constructivist pedagogical approach
Four year degree in Mathematics, Secondary Education or related field
3-5 years experience teaching middle school mathematics
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in teaching mathematics - particularly in problem-based approaches for Geometry and Algebra
Expertise with supporting differentiated instruction and implementation of learning support plans
Experience with developing, implementing and teaching anti-bias and anti-racist curricula
Expertise in developing an engaging, collaborative classroom community that encourages problem solving, critical thinking skills, service learning and student leadership
A deep commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community for students and adults, based on cultural competence, social justice, and respect for diverse perspectives and backgrounds
Capacity to address the developmental needs of academically motivated middle school students
Passion and skill to contribute positively to an educational environment that supports a lifelong love of learning, identity, self-esteem, and respect for the community and the world in which we live
Commitment to engaging in community conversation and initiatives that center equity and inclusivity
Passion and skill to contribute positively to the school community and to develop strong relationships with students and families
