The Woodward Academy Performing Arts program has a long tradition of excellence in performance including consistent superior ratings at state assessments (GMEA LGPE) and state and national music competitions. Travel opportunities, both domestic and international, are also an integral part of the curriculum.
Position Summary: This position currently involves teaching three periods of guitar classes, one period of music production class, and one period of co-teaching a band class. This position currently leads Woodward Academy’s Jazz Band program, consisting of Tuesday afternoon Big Band rehearsal and tutorial rehearsals of 1-3 small jazz combos. This position also currently co-leads the pit orchestra for the winter musical production. This position begins August 1, 2026. The successful candidate will be an excellent music educator who is energetic, hard working, and motivated to maintain and improve this very successful program.
Specific Duties Include:
The ideal candidate would teach guitar classes and electronic music production classes.
The ideal candidate would possess percussion experience as well as an eagerness to assist the concert and marching band programs
Have a broad base of musical skills, including a strong background in music theory
Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with the Performing Arts Department Chair as well as colleagues in the Performing Arts Department, particularly with other members of the band faculty.
Carry out various auxiliary duties related to the general operation of the Upper School.
Create a learning environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and learning styles of the students.
Maintain regular communication with students and their parents regarding progress.
Display a willingness to follow school and departmental procedures and regulations.
Turn in grades in a timely manner, as well as maintain records of all classes.
Required Skills:
Record of successful ensembles and diverse musical skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy
Competency with basic word processing, spreadsheets, and internet.
A solid understanding of learning challenges, as well as the accommodations and differentiated learning techniques to support students’ needs.
Strong organizational and classroom management skills.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Music Education or related fields preferred.
5+ years of successful experience as a music educator preferred.
The Music Teacher and Assistant Band Director, Upper School position is an exempt, 10-month position.
