Job Summary
The Primary School encompasses Junior Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5. It is a collaborative environment that requires excellent communication, flexibility, and deep knowledge of child development.
The Kindergarten Homeroom Teacher is responsible for providing a nurturing, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment that supports students’ academic, social-emotional, and physical growth. A successful teacher in this role understands the unique demands of working at an independent school, is passionate about the School’s Mission, and embraces its Portrait of a Graduate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as the homeroom teacher for Kindergarten.
Teach core kindergarten curriculum, including early literacy, mathematics, and social studies using developmentally appropriate practices.
Support students’ social-emotional growth, executive functioning, and independence through intentional routines and responsive guidance.
Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement an effective, engaging, and meaningful scope and sequence that is vertically and horizontally aligned.
Employ research-based and innovative instructional and assessment methods appropriate for early learners.
Create a warm, safe, and well-structured learning environment with consistent routines and high expectations that encourage curiosity, risk-taking, and growth.
Observe, assess, and document student progress; provide timely, individualized feedback.
Communicate proactively and consistently with families regarding student growth and classroom experiences.
Supervise students as assigned by the Division Director.
Contribute to the life of Day School by coaching and/or leading student clubs and activities as appropriate.
Be a visible presence at school events.
Actively participate in Primary School team meetings, faculty meetings, and professional development.
Model a commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth.
Uphold Day School’s Mission and core values.
Other duties may be assigned by the Head of School or Division Director.
Experience teaching early childhood or elementary students preferred.
Indiana Teaching License not required.
Deep understanding of the developmental needs of young children.
