Position Summary
Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart seeks a dynamic English educator for its Upper School, with experience in teaching and assessing literary analysis across fiction and nonfiction genres and various forms of writing, including analytical, argumentative, personal, and creative. This position is a one-year appointment for the 2025 - 2026 school year. The position requires a versatile instructor capable of teaching across grades 9-12, with a commitment to supporting diverse learning needs and serving in a highly relational learning environment.
Position Requirements:
Teach four sections of English, creative writing, and/or interdisciplinary humanities courses
Deliver engaging, rigorous, and developmentally appropriate instruction in literature, composition, and critical thinking
Design units and assessments that reflect diverse voices, support analytical writing, and foster a love of literature while aligning with departmental goals and school values.
Work with students across the standard college preparatory, honors, and Advanced Placement levels
Foster a deep appreciation for literature and language
Provide actionable and timely feedback and coaching to support student growth in analytical reading, writing, and thinking skills
Promote student agency, inquiry, and discussion through student-centered pedagogies
Integrate writing instruction across genres (analytical, creative, personal narrative) and support all phases of the writing process (outlining, drafting, peer review, revision).
Create an engaging and dynamic classroom environment
Provide individualized student support and offer accessible extra help
Design adaptive learning strategies for varied student abilities and learning differences
Assess academic progress through personalized evaluation
Communicate proactively and professionally with parents/caregivers about student progress and learning
Collaborate with faculty to enhance learning experiences and participate actively in a team-based culture of collegiality
Collaborate in designing experiential and interdisciplinary learning opportunities beyond the confines of the traditional classroom
Help students publish and share their writing through the Scholastic Writing awards, the Medley (the school’s literary and arts journal), and Sacred Heart Network opportunities
Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning through actively engaging in ongoing professional growth and development
Participate actively in the life of the wider school community by: serving as an advisor, a moderator for a grade level, and a moderator for a co-curricular student activity; participating in weekly community time; attending occasional evening and weekend events; and performing other duties as assigned.
Faculty are encouraged to serve as athletic team coaches. Full-time faculty receive a stipend for coaching.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in English or a related field
Master's degree in English, education, or writing preferred
Minimum three years of classroom teaching experience
Experience teaching Advanced Placement Literature and Composition or equivalent preferred
Strong pedagogical skills for literature and writing instruction
Exceptional student engagement and support capabilities
Commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning approaches
Demonstrated ability to develop individualized learning strategies and flexibility in teaching methodology
Strong organizational and communication skills
Alignment with the Sacred Heart educational mission to educate the whole child
The ideal candidate will demonstrate subject area expertise, pedagogical innovation, and a genuine passion for supporting student learning.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the ability to move about the classroom and campus, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Teachers must be able to supervise students in both indoor and outdoor settings, operate standard classroom technology, and engage in active instruction throughout the school day. Visual and auditory acuity are essential for communication, classroom management, and student safety.
