The Rectory School was founded in 1920 when the Reverend and Mrs. Frank H. Bigelow sought to create an individualized learning program for their son John.  The benchmark program has developed into a distinct advantage of a Rectory education.  Rectory has the capacity to meet the educational needs and aspirations of a wide range of students – from strong traditional learners to those who have inquisitive minds but need more academic support.

The Rectory School’s 138-acre rural campus provides a scenic and secure home to approximately 270 students, covering the ages from Pre-K to 9^th grade.  Rectory is a coeducational institution at all levels.  The 5^th – 9^th grade junior school has approximately 210 students 145 of which are boarding students.  These students come to Rectory from all around the United States and from nine different countries. Average class size is 10 and the student teacher ratio is 4:1.

Computer Science Teacher

The successful candidate for the computer science position will possess a comprehensive understanding of current technologies, applications, and thinking that comprise the computer sciences, all the while keeping the needs and interests of the middle school students in mind. The computer science teacher will oversee the program development and implementation of a comprehensive 7-9 computer science program, teaching the computer science offerings in the upper grades. The successful candidate will demonstrate successful collaboration skills while also being able to work independently with minimal oversight. The ideal candidate embraces the ever-changing nature of technology; encourages students to explore and experiment while they dive into technique; and is eager to try new and creative approaches to teaching and learning. In addition to teaching and coaching responsibilities, the successful candidate is expected to serve as a dorm parent in one of the school residences.

The position will be responsible for but not limited to the following

• Teach approximately four computer science courses across grades 7-9.
• Understand the hardware and software needed to support the course curriculum.
• Create an environment that encourages creative and independent use of computer science skills throughout the school
• Model effective uses of current and new instructional technology inside and outside the classroom for teachers and students
• Instruct users in the appropriate uses of technology in an educational environment

Qualifications

• A passion for independent school education as well as the professionalism, energy, and commitment necessary to achieve the responsibilities of this position.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• B.S. in a computer science content area preferred. Advanced degree in education, computer science, or a related field is ideal.
• Experience teaching programming, preferably in a middle school or upper elementary setting.
• Familiarity with teaching programs such as Scratch, HTML, Python, and Java.
• Experience with robotics or related fields
