Position Title: School Counselor Reports to: Head of School Employment Type: Full-time, Twelve Month
Overview:
The School Counselor at Oak Meadow Montessori School plays a vital role in supporting the emotional, social, and academic development of students from toddler through 8th grade. Grounded in Montessori philosophy, the counselor collaborates with educators, families, and staff to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that nurtures the whole child.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Support
Provide individual and small group support for emotional, social, and behavioral needs.
Support students in developing self-awareness, conflict resolution skills, and positive peer relationships.
Promote mindfulness, emotional regulation, and independence aligned with Montessori principles.
Observe students in the classroom and on campus to support holistic understanding and intervention.
Preventative and Developmental Programming
Develop and deliver age-appropriate social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum on topics such as friendship, emotional literacy, peer dynamics, identity, transitions, and digital citizenship.
Lead school-wide initiatives that promote well-being, respect, empathy, and inclusion.
Family and Community Engagement
Partner with parents and caregivers to support student growth and wellbeing.
Provide family education workshops or resources on relevant social-emotional and developmental topics.
Serve as a liaison between families and external providers when needed.
Collaboration and Consultation
Work closely with teachers and staff to identify student needs and coordinate support plans.
Participate in student support team meetings and collaborate on interventions and accommodations.
Support transitions between program levels (e.g., Primary to Lower Elementary, Elementary to Middle School).
Crisis Response and Risk Assessment
Provide immediate support for students in emotional or behavioral crisis.
Conduct risk assessments when concerns arise about student safety and follow up according to school protocols.
Maintain up-to-date documentation and ensure confidentiality in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Experience working with early childhood through middle school students, ideally in a Montessori or progressive educational setting.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Deep respect for the developmental needs of children and adolescents.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice.
Preferred Qualifications:
Licensure or certification as a School Counselor or equivalent.
Familiarity with Montessori philosophy and practices.
Bilingual or multicultural competency.
Training in restorative practices, mindfulness, or trauma-informed care.
